Why do I represent clients regarding tax issues and tax planning? The answer to that requires that I tell you my story. When I was about 18 years old I got a job putting up those Open House signs for new home developments. I can remember the man who hired me telling me that they were going to pay me with a 1099 and that if I didn’t pay my taxes along the way, that I would end up owing the IRS money at the end of the year. Did I listen? I was an eighteen year old kid! NO way! I just spent all of the money and ended up owing at the end of the year. When I initially saw that tax bill, I was scared and my stepfather ended up calling the IRS for me and got me into my first installment agreement. Yes, only the first of three installment agreements that I’ve had with the IRS in my life.The next job that I got very soon after was working for a printing company that printed tax forms. Yep, that was the start of my tax career. In that position, I helped customers as a customer service representative to choose the correct tax forms for their needs. I’ve been dealing with 1040 forms, 941 forms and the like for over 35 years!Later, while I was in law school I had an internship at a legal aid office exclusively serving senior citizens. In that position, I dealt with the Social Security Administration where I almost exclusively worked on Social Security benefits issues and problems with tax returns. Fast forward to 1999, I started my tax problem resolution practice. I did it because I could see a true need for regular people to resist government abuse and overreach. The bureaucracy is so vast and so unaccountable that a typical, even highly intelligent, normal citizen has almost no hope of successfully resolving issues with the IRS or understanding the Tax Code. The Internal Revenue Code is so vast that if you read 8 hours a day; five days a week, it would take you 80 years to read it all! Has anyone ever read the entire thing? No… There simply isn’t time in your life.Over the years, I’ve learned quite a great deal about navigating the tax system and dealing with the IRS. I absolutely love helping clients level the playing field when they are trying to save on their taxes or if they have a problem with the IRS that they need help resolving. I am a believer in small, limited government. I don’t think that our Founding Fathers ever intended for our government to get as big or as controlling as it is.
