My role at FMO required me to be flexible and cover a wide range of tasks. I enjoy the fact that one day I can be deeply involved in a technical task, while the next I will be looking at high level strategy. The diversity in my work makes it interesting and keeps me motivated. FMO is the Dutch Development Bank providing loans to and investments in private companies in emerging countries across the world. Balance sheet size was EUR 9 billion. The Risk Management department, a team of 8 people, is responsible for the management and monitoring of the balance sheet and all market and financial risks of the bank.Over the 6 years I was responsible for:Strategic Balance Sheet Management;Portfolio Performance Measurement;Risk return analyses;Interest Rate Risk;FX Risk;Capital planning and capital management;Liquidity planning and risk management;Derivative valuations, company valuations.

Responsible for: Liquidity Risk management;Basel III implementation;ALCO;

Initially I covered Eastern Europe Central Asia (EECA) general investments. After 1.5 years I moved to specialise in investments in the financial sector, mostly banks, in the ECA region as well as Latin America. One year later I moved to covering financial sector Africa only. I have been responsible for:• Developing the FMO strategy for investments in the financial sector across all emerging markets. • Reviewing the banking sectors of various countries and selecting banks for investment. • Conducting due diligence on banks and insurance companies for investment. • Negotiation and structuring equity participation and exits (in banks and commercial institutions).

A secondment at Frontclear, helping with capital modelling, capital planning and valuation of the guarantees.

Sanlam Private Equity division of the Sanlam Group.As a member of a small team I was exposed to a great variety of private equity and corporate finance activity. I was the lead transactor or supported the lead transactor on private equity investments. I was responsible for:• Detailed valuations and financial modelling using IRR and NPV calculations to measure expected and actual returns on investments. • Conducting industry research around potential new investments.• Managing portfolio investments by attending board meetings, reviewing quarterly management accounts, and interacting with management. • Writing up investment proposals to the investment committee for proposed new investments and for the exit of current investments.• Due diligence investigations on new acquisitions.• Structuring new investments for tax and financial efficiency.
