About Darryll Patterson
I make doctors. Well, not from scratch. As a medical educator, I guide students down the arduous path of becoming competent physicians. Medical education is complex and challenging; however, it is personally gratifying. I love teaching and the challenges that come with it. It's hard to top the 'light bulb' moments when a student grasps a particularly difficult or perplexing topic.As a primary care physician in internal medicine, I actively look for methods to improve my communication and listening skills. Active listening, in my opinion, is the essential skill a physician has to improve the health and quality of life of patients. Although I teach all students physician competencies, my area of focus is patient communication. Fortunately, I benefitted from two fellowships in medical education after residency and a course in patient communication. The medical students and residents I work with have a spectrum of abilities, so I use various teaching methods, assessments, and feedback techniques depending on the student.As the Chair of Internal Medicine at UNRMED, academic faculty, and primary care physician, I'm all about learning and improving professionally, not only with students but personally. My interests vary but ultimately, I like to see progress and realize self-actualization. It's essential to me to grow as an educator, administrator, physician, and leader, and I welcome opportunities to expand.
