Developing an Infrastructure Protection strategic framework, launching the Infrastructure Protection Unit & JMPD support unit & engaging with key role players in the business of combating vandalism.4. Developing a Freight Strategy ... focusing on protecting Johannesburg's road infrastructure by effective management of overload control, confining heavy vehicles to appropriate routes through the city & maybe even restricting freight movement to certain times of the day and certain freeway lanes only.The Advanced Traffic Signals Management System contract (to facilitate communication with all existing traffic signals with enhanced urban traffic management features) was canceled due to lack of funding. Instead, a Smart Traffic System was developed "in-house" to perform this ATMS type function and also to:1. monitor the conditions at the traffic signal controller cabinet (and measure inputs into, and outputs from, traffic signal controllers) and 2. integrate all faults reporting systems (including social media) onto a common operator interface in the TOC.Future-proofing existing systems by researching innovative technology, including:1. Smart City o Wireless connectivity o Cashless payment2. Shared / Connected mobility o Bike / car / ridesharing o Mobility as a Service (MAAS)3. The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) commenced on 1 January 2001 and its core competencies are the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of municipal roads and road infrastructure in the City of Johannesburg. The Corporate Management Team, a committee constituted of the MD and the 5 General Executive Managers, forms the backbone of collective management of the JRA. The JRA has a total length of 9 247km of roads under its control, of which 1 400km are gravel roads, serving a resident population of 3 225 780. In total, the replacement value of assets under the management and control of JRA is approximately R31,63 bnGEM Responsibilities:1. Executive management: Responsible for 62 Technical / Engineering staff & 406 Depot staff / Technical / Field Member of Executive Management Team with MD & 5 other GEMs Report and advise JRA Board meetings & Council Committees2. Introduced ITS to eThekwini (Durban) in late 1990's ... which was considered cutting edge and rather a "nice-to-have" in South Africa at the time.Deployed a fibre optic cable network as a priority means of communicating field devices (CCTV, VMS, radar detectors and traffic signals) back to the TCC) Deployed current Traffic Management technologies ... particularly in UTC, such as CCTV, ramp metering, wireless communications to traffic signal controllers, traffic signal database, real-time adaptive traffic signal control (SCOOT) to name a few.Deployed a Freeway Management System, including radar traffic monitoring, VMS information signs CCTV etc. ... linking to the Traffic Control Centre.Introduced the concept of Electronic Fare Payment for Public Transport, in the form of bank issued fare media, in the early 2000's. However, this was only eventually deployed in 2012.
