Anticipation paid off when I had James Earl Jones obit done a week before he died, even though he wasn't known to be ill.

Based on the information I provided, the aforementioned banks and brokerage houses would restrict, suspend or terminate customers’ accounts. Accuracy was a must, and I was occasionally required to quality check the work of colleagues.

Because I had a reputation for clean, concise copy and the desk needed help, I edited sports copy for style, accuracy, grammar and space. Toward the end of my stint, I worked the slot, where mine were the last eyes to see a story before it was printed.

Then covered the football team to its 1990 UPI coaches poll national championship, capped by a 45-21 rout of Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl.

After a first year at the paper in which I did various general assignment stories, I was suddenly thrust into the role of major league baseball beat writer because the man who held the position before me was unceremoniously fired. I had nothing to do with his firing -- he was the president of the Baseball Writers Association of America at the time, and nobody removes a person like that for a guy one year out of college without something else as a contributing factor. I was thrust into his position amid his acrimony and those of his loyal colleagues across the U.S. and Canada, as he still covered games for The Sporting News. He never missed an opportunity to try to make my existence miserable, but I ignored him, persevered and completed the most important mission: Finding 106 unique ways to say "Braves lose" and try to keep it interesting. They were horrible. I traveled with them wherever they went -- from the West Coast to Montreal and seven stadiums in between. It was a grind.
