Village Hopecore International is a small, innovative non-profit working in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya since 2000 to alleviate poverty through microfinance loans with business training and support, and promote health through clinical assessment and education. Our goal is to transform lives through enterprise, health, and education. The county is a a poor, rural region with an estimated population of 400,000, and we have recently expanded our reach to serve virtually all of the population with our programs.During the past two years, Hopecore's 1,265 Community Health Workers have made nearly 500,000 home visits where they educated the community on prevention of COVID-19. Because hospital facilities in East Africa are limited, disease prevention is critical to controlling the spread of Coronavirus. Our health team created flip charts to help share information, and have made them available as open source documents so that other organizations can use them.With a loan of only $700, individuals who receive business training, health intervention, malaria prevention, and HIV counseling can triple the amount of income they earn, enabling them to provide additional educational opportunities to their children, clean drinking water, and life-saving medical assistance. Our (mostly female) entrepreneurs begin business ventures that include dairy cows, tea plantations, chicken farmers, sewing, and dry goods businesses. Over our history, we have averaged a 98% loan repayment rate on over 3,300 loans.In addition to the COVID-19 response, our health team has installed clean drinking water and hand washing stations in over 300 schools and hospitals, serving 80,000 students, and provides a school-based mobile health clinic to 72 schools. We believe that the health of the student is key to education, which breaks the cycle of poverty. We have distributed over 40,000 mosquito bed nets to school children, and provide three health days to each school in our school districts.
