I become CEO of Mighty AI one morning in July 2017, when my Co-Founder and CEO was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and had to step down. I led the company through this sad time, including his passing a few months later, and then through a stage of growth culminating in the company's acquisition by Uber in July of 2019. At the time of the acquisition, we had close to 200 employees (FTE and contract) in Seattle, Boston, and Stuttgart, Germany.

I wrote a lot of the early backend code at Mighty AI (nee Spare5), and dabbled in infrastructure as well as iOS and frontend web code to design novel tasking interfaces for our crowdsourcing platform. I also hired and managed all of our engineers, data scientists, and engineering managers for the first few years before becoming CEO.Mighty AI’s platform curates high quality training and validation datasets for teams developing computer vision models across the autonomous vehicle, retail, robotics, and other industries. Our fully managed approach to image labeling delivers highly complex ground truth data and model validation at enterprise scale. We consult with every client to configure annotation workflows based on unique project specifications and flexibly tune each project as requirements evolve. Our cloud-based annotation tools (including segmentation, bounding boxes, keypoints, polylines, metadata attribution, and more), global community of trained annotators, and machine learning-based quality assurance systems enable us to generate millions of complex ground truth labels and validate detection model output with guaranteed accuracy.

First software development engineer (SDE) and later first software development manager (SDM) on Amazon Local Restaurants, a true "startup within a big company". The initial Restaurants team was two people, myself and my manager. I helped define the product requirements, did the initial tech design, worked on the press release / faq (working backwards FTW!) and recruited, hired, and managed the engineering team. My role involved everything from talking to merchants and consumers to coordinating with other teams at Amazon on implementation details and presenting our ideas and progress to company leadership. I also personally contributed to the code base, writing tools to support restaurant, menu, and order management for internal users.

Eyejot was launched at the DEMO 07 conference in January of 2007.As a founder and the CTO, I was responsible for all technical aspects of the platform, as well as helping shape the overall direction and focus of the company, and being a public face and evangelist for the platform at industry events and conferences. Spam Arrest is the leading challenge-response based anti-spam service. During my tenure, I led all aspects of Spam Arrest's software architecture and development, as well as technical operations, including building out our colocated server infrastructure, and later restructuring the platform to leverage Amazon Web Services including S3 and EC2. Performance, reliability, and availability are the primary goals of the Spam Arrest sevice, which at its peak was in Alexa.com's top 1000 internet sites. Developed software to facilitate registry and registrar operations for several top level domains, including .CC. Some of my projects included:* a private labelled domain reseller system* a common registry interface enabling eNIC and resellers to connect to various disparate registries (HTTP,XML-RPC,RRP,EPP,SMTP, and custom protocols) via a single interface* an RFC 2832-compliant registry-registrar-protocol (RRP) server, allowing .CC and other TLD registries to be accessed in the same manner as .COM. This project was completed in several weeks, with one other developer, using just the rfc and business rule documents from VeriSign as the design specification. Altrec is an online retailer of outdoor lifestyle products. As part of the early development team, I developed much of the company's core platform and infrastructure, from core e-commerce components and website functionality to backend applications for merchandising and production use. * Ported prototype web application from Perl/ePerl to Java Servlets.* Created custom templating system in Java, including support for cobranding and caching.* Integrated early web services from USPS to provide automated return label generation. * Built a custom MS Access / SQL Server / VBA application for inventory management.
