I´m a scientist, who was always passionate about the arts. For 18 years I was joining art courses and ateliers, yet still, I did not regard it as a career until two years ago. It was indeed a real "Eureka" moment when I learned about the profession "Medical Illustrator." A brief outline of my journey: after I had graduated with a Bachelor's in Biology in 2004, majoring in Molecular Biology and Genetics, I started a PhD at a pediatric hospital in Madrid. I resigned because of a series of challenging experiences. I moved to the Netherlands to research the genetics of children's growth disorders. There, surrounded by MDs, I'd be the one they'd consult with for genetic advice. That is how my knowledge was applied in practice, where I learned how to communicate clinically.I have seen a pattern in my career trajectory: learning what I need for new roles. As a post-doc, I was an expert in molecular biology, learning cell biology and working in mouse models. And now, in Barcelona, as an assistant professor in a medical school, I have to teach the disciplines of physiology and histology—domains I've had to master to effectively teach deeply.For personal reasons, I moved to Valladolid and found the opportunity to work in a lab that developed elastin-like molecules for different animal models. My previous experience in cellular biology, animal models, and histology, among others, proved invaluable. However, science was not enough. So in December 2018, I began working at a local company that managed an e-learning platform for the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology. There, I combined my scientific background with keys to digital learning and visual design in building engaging learning experiences for more than 400 students.Since my moment of eureka, I have embraced the field of medical illustration. In my portfolio, it is possible to discover graphical abstracts and figures for research articles; infographics; explanations for surgical techniques; and many more.I work to improve clinical communications for private clinics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology marketing firms, and medical influencers. Every one of the illustrations that I draft is clinically correct as well as timely, specifically oriented by my clients' unique needs.
