I have always favored an entrepreneurial approach to solving problems in biomedical research. Don't have the background knowledge? Get it by finding someone who does and engaging them as a collaborator. Don't have the right tool? Develop it or find someone who can. People telling you that something can't be done? Question them and find out why. They might be wrong. They might be thinking inside the box. Or they might be right and it will lead you to seek other ways to solve the problem at hand. Academic researchers often have a lot of smart people giving advice, the successful people know always listen, but also don't be afraid to choose your own path.

Professor Of Pathology, Pediatrics And Precision MedicineGeorge Washington University Aug 2008 - Dec 2022Washington D.C. Metro AreaI am a principal investigator in Dr. Eric Hoffman's Center for Genetic Medicine Research where I work on the pathogenesis and new treatment approaches to the pediatric cancer pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB). I have a lot of great colleagues in this Center who are doing all kinds of cool things like working on cures for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, white matter disorders, brain tumors, asthma and cystic fibrosis. Pathobiology ResearchInternational Pleuropulmonary Blastoma Registry Sep 2002 - Dec 2022Minneapolis, MnWith the guidance of Pepper Dehner I became interested in the unique pathology and biology of pleuropulmonary blastoma, an embryonal tumor of the lung that presents in children. I have supported the pathology review and development of research goals for the IPPBR since 2002. This is an incredible organization that despite its small size has made an enormous impact in the lives of families affected by PPB and related conditions. www.ppbregistry.org

Chief Of Anatomic PathologyChildren'S National Health System Jul 2008 - Jul 2017Washington, DcI came to Children's National in 2008 to help rebuild the Division of Anatomic Pathology. We have hired a great team of pathologists, histologists, medical technologists and supporting staff who make it all work smoothly. We have 7 pathologists who have been trained at the nation's top programs and who are subspecialty trained in Pediatric Pathology, Hematopathology, Neuropathology and Renal Pathology. Our academic portfolio is enlarging with first author papers in Science and Cell and numerous other important contributions to the literature both as primary researchers and supporting team members. -
Assistant ProfessorWashington University School Of Medicine Sep 2002 - Aug 2008St. LouisI came back to Washington University after three years at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to work with my mentor Pepper Dehner in surgical pathology and also start a research laboratory program on the genetics of pleuropulmonary blastoma. With a lot of support from the International PPB Registry physicians, my Department of Pathology and Immunology and key genetics experts Paul Goodfellow, Brian Suarez, Jen Ivanovich, Alison Whelan and Chris Gurnett we were able to successfully identify DICER1 mutations as the major genetic predisposition for PPB and its associated childhood cancer predisposition syndrome. -
Assistant Member, Director Of Anatomic PathologySt. Jude Children'S Research Hospital Jul 1999 - Sep 2002Memphis, TnMy first job out of pediatric pathology fellowship was to work as a surgical pathologist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It was a wonderful experience in a mission-focused institution and I had the opportunity to work with an outstanding array of clinical oncologists, scientists and a terrific support staff in the Department of Pathology.
