  1st Year Engineering has changed to a 'flipped classroom' model, where students will watch pre-recorded lecture videos and then take part in active learning activities during scheduled contact hours, resulting in more learning-by-doing. Scheduled class time take place in learning studio rooms, and students work in small groups and help each other to navigate the learning. These small group active learning sessions are supported by a team including (i) an active learning instructor;(ii) several Teaching Assistants; and(iii) 1st Year Studio Project Interns. 1st Year Studio Project Interns are student leaders who help by:(i) circulating around in active learning sessions to support students when they have questions or difficulties;(ii) providing motivation for learning; and (iii) acting as a role model to their fellow peers. Interns work with students one-on-one or as a group, to answer questions on course content, help with practice problems and provide study strategies. Interns will not be required to grade any course material.While not engaged with active learning activities, Student Interns may be required to assist in the MakerSpace. While assisting in the MakerSpace Student Interns will be expected to assume duties and responsibilities listed below. · Unlock and relock the Maker Space Headquarters on schedule · Facilitate maker activities within the space within the various areas of expertise · Be able to demonstrate safe operation of tools within the space · Learn, follow and monitor compliance with all safety standards · Maintain a tidy workspace · Maintain list of supplies for re-ordering · Liaison with staff and faculty · Report any problems or concerns immediately. · Serve as a role model for students. · Follow the University of Calgary policies and procedures and behave in accordance with the School's values and expectations.
