My research aims to study patterns in speciation by leveraging the young Drosophila nasuta species group. I leverage computational and statistical methods to process short and long read genomic data to determine the phylogenetic relationship between species in the group and their inversion patterns.

I develop and teach lectures on the basics of Python for data analysis in this biannual 10 lecture series. Our goal is to teach scientists who do not have a programming background the basics of the most popular data science related language--Python. In addition to going through the concepts behind variables, functions, data scrtuctures, and some popular modules like Pandas or Matplotlib, we also provide scientists resources to improve their programming skills beyond the course.

I studied the evolution of young sex chromosomes in the Drosophila nasuta clade by performing comparative analyses of next generation sequencing data between sex chromosomes in different stages in evolution. The analyses were done using a general suite of bioinformatics methods involving sequence alignments (with BWA), SNP calling (with GATK), calculating rates of evolution (with PAML). I processed the data and visualized the results by writing and using Python and R scripts.

I led a team of 3 to help a client in the sustainable energy space with two questions. We developed a method that calculates carbon savings which will be incorporated as a feature to the client product. We additionally estimated potential carbon savings of the client product to showcase client value to future investors.

I continue my role as an editor for the BSR, where I work with multiple writers on creating and publishing articles about the newest research happening in the STEM field at UC Berkeley while making it accessible to the general public.

I hired and managed editors and writers within the Berkeley Science Review, coordinating deadlines between different groups within the organization. I also ran editing workshops for editors and writers focusing on conciseness and storytelling, making the publication pipeline more efficient.As editor in chief, I worked with senior members of the Berkeley Science Review to geographically expand the BSR distribution through a university-wide crowdfunding project. We were able to raise funds to double the number of new distribution boxes placed on off campus locations. Regular visits to the 2 boxes indicate regular readership.Additionally, I have worked on a collaboration with the College of Letters and Science, where our writers published articles through their publication route while expanding our distribution to their major donors.

I was on the editing team, where I coordinated with writers and designers to produce the graduate student-run volunteer magazine. I worked together with multiple writers each semester, editing multiple drafts of their articles until fit for publication. I also took on a secondary role as webmaster, maintaining and updating the BSR website as needed.

During this 6 month internship, I worked in a team on a due diligence project where we perform company assessments and propose recommendations for our venture capital client. I have taken on 6 diligences--acting as team lead for 2 of them--throughout this internship, producing decks and documents about startups our client is interested in, highlighting: the state of the market, their competition, comparables, business plan, the quality of the startup team, technological novelty, and intellectual patents. At times, my team and I would interview these startups to obtain more detailed information and advise our client with regards to investing.Additionally, I wrote a gap analysis on the integration of blockchain with synthetic biology and personal genomics.

I worked as the Content Manager, Editor, and Journalist for CitizenTEKK, a startup magazine whose goal is to make the voices of startups & tech be heard. I worked together with 80 writers a month to publish high quality articles under tight deadlines. All the while, I took part in maintaining CitizenTEKK's social media presence and SEO when new articles would come out.

This time frame encompasses my experience in graduate school. My main area of study was in small protein biochemistry, where I used biophysical, biochemical, structural biology, & cellular biology approaches to discover inhibitors for BHRF1, a viral protein associated with cancer.In addition to my own research, I edited and proofread grants to fund the research going on in the lab, presented scientific research to different departments and interest groups, and trained new students.I've also worked in a computational genomics lab, where I studied single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the context of linkage disequilibrium. I used R programming language and Unix to sift through genomic data from 3 populations to determine the linkage disequilibrium of distant SNPs within each group through the implementation of a Markov Model.

Principal Investigator: Edyta GreerUtilized the software known as Gaussian to perform theoretical calculations of naturally occurring compound derived drug candidates for transition states in order to determine their mechanistic reactions via density functional theory.

Tutored students in Biology and Chemistry, helped students with lab exercises and homework assignments, reviewed lecture notes to prepare students for examinations, identified various structures on slides with microscopes, and assisted with animal dissections and identification anatomical structures.
