Profile bio

About Daphne-Tatiana Tolentino-Canlas

I am currently a faculty member of the Department of Broadcast Communication at the College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman. I teach graduate and undergraduate courses in media theory, research, transmedia and internet studies. From 2020-2022 I facilitated the shift of in-person teaching to remote delivery of our brand new curriculum, and announced the Department initiative to commemorate 100 Years of Broadcasting in the Philippines in 2022.I have been a media and communications practitioner for over 20 years. My experience includes working as a scriptwriter, director, talent and executive producer for television programs for investigative news magazines, tv documentaries, reality shows, travelogues, and children's programs. My work has been recognized locally and internationally, the most prestigious being the 2002 Prix Jeunesse UNICEF Prize for children's programs. I continue my advocacy through work with the Probe Media Foundation, Inc. where I am currently its president. I work with like-minded media practitioners to nurture a new generation of ethical, creative, and critical thinkers in the media. My work in the mass media inspired me to branch out to corporate communications, public relations, and project coordination. It was in these work environments that I encountered online communications and user-generated content on the Web. Eager to understand more, I went back to school in 2005 and earned an MA in Media Studies, with a concentration on internet culture and web content from the University of the Philippines. In 2010, I was offered a lecturer position at the College of Mass Communication where I taught internet studies, video production, new media theory, media research, and advised students on their undergraduate theses. It was here that my interest deepened on transitioning spaces and identities with our use of ubiquitous personal technology. I found my interests at the intersections of young people's use of technology to construct identities, the embedded notions of a national identity; transitioning media audiences, and the shifting notions of self, relationships, and society in a digitally/virtually connected world. In 2017, I graduated with a PhD in Rhetorics, Communication and Information Design (RCID) at Clemson University as a Fulbright Fellow. My dissertation project involves Youtube videos, social media use, quotidian rhetorics, visual and digital rhetorics, and its implications on race, space, and identity.

Listed skills include Video Production, Writing, Event Management, Television, and 16 others.
