I organized, created, and prioritized feature roadmap based on market/customer feedback and dictated R&D activities for the product evolution.

In Photonics PSS, responsibilities included market evaluation & analysis, feature proposals, roadmap planning, scheduling and managing of all photonics and security features for the 1830-Photonics Service Switch (PSS) and optical line system. I prioritized the feature roadmap based on market/customer feedback and dictated R&D activities for the product evolution, which included but was not limited to: new amplifier development (Hybrid Raman, Ultra Long Haul EDFA, C+L Raman), all Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) development (1x9, twin 1x20, twin NxM, FlexGrid Wavelength Tracker Optical Channel Monitor), system configurations (SuperFlexChannel, Colorless-Directionless-Contentionless-FlexGrid CDC-F), and security enhancements (IPv6 w / IPSec, AES-256, Optical Intrusion Detection & lawful photonics intercept).

Responsibilities included planning, scheduling, and managing work assignments for the System Engineering and Architecture (SE&A) team (of 12 members). The team charter was to develop best-in-class converged optical product, combining best assets of Long Haul DWDM with Terabit OTN switch fabric, while also keeping abreast of new technologies. The product portfolio (1830-PSS) was the first in the industry to support 100Gigabit transmission on a single wavelength using coherent technology.

After the Alcatel and Lucent merger, there was a need to cross-pollinate architecture and design ideas within the combined Optical Division, Based on my technical leadership, communication skills, and planning abilities, I was selected for this task to broaden the combined knowledge base and to provide synergy between the core R&D units in the US and France. Based in Paris, my responsibilities included Network Management specifications, Security definitions, Project Planning, and Product Roadmaps for the 162x-LM. As the SE lead and technical liaison, I coordinated R&D efforts across continents to provide platform commonalities, code reuse, HW reuse, and promoted the common up-front design process. An example of this success is the "look and feel" to the Zero Install Craft (ZIC), common to both the 1830-PSS and 162x-LM.

Responsibilities included TL1 definitions, security, CIT features, and Management and Support for the Metropolis EON, Wavestar (TM) LambdaXtreme, WSM, and next generation DWDM systems within ONG product portfolio. Architected a number of OT and OA packs, designed engineering rules/guidelines for the complete system, and architected a software-based Software Control of Optical Transmission (SCOT), a parallel process that simultaneously runs on multiple modules within a DWDM system to dynamically control optical transmission on the DWDM network.

The LambdaProtect(TM) Shared Ring Switch (SRS) is an Optical Shared Protection Ring switch (OSPRing) designed to offer protection (<50ms end-to-end) of SONET and data services on optical networks in the event of network failures. Responsibilities included designing, architecting, engineering, and building this product from the ground up. I was involved in the Patented Optical Switch Fabric and Proprietary Advanced Performance Monitoring Modules.

Wrote test plans, evaluated, analyzed, and supported the first truly converged Voice and Data platform - the PathStar(TM) Access Server (PSAS). I was lead member of System Test group composed of dozens of MTS's and STA's. Wrote White Papers to describe functions and features of the PSAS as it relates to external interfaces and devices (e.g. IMCI Open-I 1000, HP Broadband, Hammer, Smartbit and Adtech). Was promoted to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) as a result of outstanding contribution to this project.

Proposed, designed, and performed experiments to detect and analyze contaminants on surfaces of, or imbedded within micron size spherical droplets; established a method to experimentally determine the evaporation rate of a water shell on a solid particle as a function of relative humidity and particle size. Discovered chaotic light scattering from oscillating spheres.

Performed field experiments with Canada's Atmospheric Environmental Services (AES), together with Brookhaven National Lab (BNL), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Canada's Institute of Aerospace Research (IAR) to study the microphysics of aerosols and their interactions with clouds during the 1993 North Atlantic Regional Experiment (NARE) program.
