Sep 2011 - Jul 2015San Jose, California, Us- Built a suite of video game engine plugins for advanced externalized binaural rendering of 3D sound and reverberant environments over headphones. - Designed and implemented an 'object-based' 3D audio rendering engine and spatial modeling tool for ‘mix-once, play-anywhere’ movie soundtrack rendering.- Implemented a lightning fast, concurrent algorithm for room analysis and correction in real-time. The resulting technology guarantees playback will match as closely as possible to content creation (a true win for sound designers).- Software Architect for the DTS-X Media Player Application. In order to support HEVC 4K video rendering alongside multi-channel 11.1+ audio rendering in real-time, the application runs using a custom written, massively concurrent, multi-core, lock-free, windowed FIFO-based job scheduler. Each job is itself a simple, unit-testable, standalone software component, for easy maintenance and modularity. Such a design not only allows for larger teams to parallelize development efforts with minimal dependencies, but makes for building complex sub-systems from simpler building blocks much more effective. -
Audio Engine ProgrammerInsomniac Games Jun 2007 - Oct 2011Burbank, Ca, Us- Built a proprietary sound engine and toolset for the PS3 .- Designed and implemented a lock-free, concurrent pipeline for real-time sound file streaming using runtime statistics. This new architecture used one-quarter the RAM and one-eighth the CPU compared with the previous generation engine.- Designed and implemented an HDR (High Dynamic Range) mixing algorithm by renormalizing and refocusing the output mix based on sampled sound pressure level measurements and loudness masking criteria.- Implemented a 'near-field' rendering algorithm for properly spatializing volumetric sound sources and reverberation environments in 3D. - Developed a geometry-aware model for sound attenuation and localization over distance.- Designed an effective and scalable algorithm for sound diffraction modeling with real-time geometric traversal and propagation path discovery. - Built an early reflection generator for increased envelopment and room simulation.- Developed an offline waveguide-based feedback delay network analysis tool for generating reverb presets based on player location. - Worked with a team of sound designers to improve and extend the non-linear sound processing pipelines, including procedural sound event composition, dialogue stitching and dynamic music composition. -
