To study metabolites, they are often extracted with the help of solvents. Not all metabolites can be studied in this way, because they don’t dissolve in the solvent and a lot of the signals will be lost. To prevent this, In my research project High-Resolution Magic Angle Spinning (HR-MAS) NMR is used to study metabolites from the whole leaf. The whole leaf is placed in the NMR machine and the metabolic profile is obtained.I use the HR-MAS NMR tool to study different Arabidopsis thaliana mutants with interesting phenotypes, for example, a larger rosette surface area. The metabolic profile of these plants can be compared to the wild-type and with the help of multivariate analysis, biomarkers can be obtained. These biomarkers can be used for biological interpretation to get a picture of the systems biology of the mutants. Show less
