I changed the culture and philosophy of how the players prepare for life as a professional rugby player which resulted with league leadership and Minor Premiers in 2006 with a 100% win ratio. Five players gained representative honours in 2006, with three selected to represent England. I changed the players focus and concentrated on the lifestyle changes that were needed and behaviour patterns where they had fallen short in the past. In a short space of time this helped the players to understand their own commitment to personal excellence. I was rewarded with promotion to Reserve Grade head coach in July 2008 and set about imparting the same values and ethics into a team that was positioned outside the play-offs at the start of my tenure, eventually leading them to fifth place. During the play offs I gave opportunities to a host of promising under 18’s players and established under 21’s players, and created an empowering environment where the value of teamwork, mateship and personal excellence was paramount. From 5th place we won each game in the play offs leading to a Grand Final win away at Halifax. During the time i coached the academy and reserves I produced over 30 players that have had first grade experience in Championship, Championship 1 , Super League, or full England honours. The current full time first team squad at Widnes includes 6 home grown players that at some point have come through my tutorship as academy or reserves coach. I have experience of identifying and recruiting suitable players for the clubs scholarship programme using my knowledge and experience of junior football and the RFL’s player performance pathway.During my tenure with the academy and reserves I had experience of managing playing budgets for contracted players which enabled a direct engagement with the clubs directors and an understanding of the financial parameters in which I was expected to work.
