Joined as project engineer, and soon set about refurbishing the ancient and neglected electro-hydraulic actuator systems, which was rather aposite (see MOOG Controls Ltd, below). This included a small diesel-powered hydraulic ring-main, a couple of standalone servo-actuators, and a group of four set in the floor on an inertial mass allowing vehicle suspensions to be tested dynamically ... a so-called '4-poster rig'.Subsequently involved with various automotive development projects, all based on active vibration control, the main one being development of an active e/h low-bandwidth suspension system for a major luxury car manufacturer in the UK. That was a fun project, effectively what one would now refer to as 'Mechatronics'. Sadly the development vehicle was eventually crushed after the project funding was axed, even though to the outside world it looked like a production vehicle !!!In the mid 90s the focus of the company was strategically and successfully shifted from consultancy to that of specialist testing product development.As part of a small and dynamic enginering and software team I designed, built and developed the initial electrical control and power systems for the early ABD 'steering robot' systems which have subsequently become the core part of the company product, but I am now more deeply and regularly involved in overseeing the design and development of the power, instrumentation, and control systems for the ABD 'SPMM' series of machines of which over twenty have now been sold around the world.These class-leading precision, powerful measurement machines are used to characterise the kinematics and compliance characteristics of the suspensions of automotive vehicles, and are purchased by vehicle manufacturers, tier-one suppliers, and research establishments.
