As the Training Officer for a major Navy Installation, I develop exercises that incorporate partner agencies, tenant commands and Installation departments in response to some form of disaster. I also develop training solutions for the tenant population and external agencies. Exercise planning requires extensive networking both inside and outside the organization. It requires strategic thinking and problem solving skills, leadership of a cross functional team, and empathy of others needs, abilities, and limitations. The exercise planner must be able to build relationships with dozens of agencies to properly plan and execute effective training events. The benefit of a realistic disaster response exercise is that all participants get to work through the chaos in a safe training environment. Communications within the Installation, and external partners is always an issue. Identifying gaps in response abilities allows for accurate corrective efforts, saving cost and improving safety for all. As the Training Program Manager, I track training completion for the 1,200 Installation staff. This includes on-line training requirements and all Instructor led courses. I have the privilege of tailoring and teaching course materials as required, including providing unique training solutions to staff, tenants, and external groups. I am also proud of my work with the San Diego InfraGard Members alliance. This outstanding group of volunteers works to improve the safety and security of the 16 sectors of San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Board of Directors is a dedicated group of leaders, professionals, and a lot of fun to work with! My greatest reward is helping others succeed in their programs and making the populations in and around Naval Base Coronado safer.
