I led a team of 85 technicians that build, maintain and support the media systems that power Sportsnet, Citytv, Omni Television and 50+ radio stations across Canada. We operated at the intersection of technology and people, providing a critical role in the implementation of new technology projects and ensuring that all technologies are used to their maximum potential. Our mandate was simple and essential: We helped people get the most out of their technology tools. Key responsibilities and accomplishments:I operated successfully in an environment of significant budget cuts, reducing staff and expenses by more than 15% without operational impact, recognizing that efficiency is essential in public service.I managed and negotiated technology vendor relationships at CBC in excess of $6M annually.I conceived and led a culture-changing migration of 12,000 users to the Google for Work platform.I leveraged a multimillion-dollar cost-saving mobile carrier migration and redefined mobile work practices corporate-wide, further enhancing the return on investment both financially and through increased productivity.I led the team that was at the forefront of virtualization, containerization and operationalizing DevOps practices in a media environment.I led and participated in dozens of technology improvement and integration projects.

As Diskstream’s Product Manager I helped define the direction of the first product, the archiving component of a leading-edge media asset system. Using agile development methodologies, I directed the development team through the creation of user stories in an agile development environment. I also was the lead sales and integration engineer dealing directly with clients through the sales cycle and providing on-site support and guidance through the installation of systems.---Diskstream was a twelve-person startup based in Waterloo. The company was founded on the premise of building a commodity-based media asset management system that took video content from ingest through to archive. The management of metadata in a standards based format was integral to the project and ensured that the essence and metadata would always remain linked and able to be re-ingested into any system, thus future-proofing the assets. Unfortunately, Diskstream’s capital ran out before it became a going concern. The intellectual property was later acquired by Miranda.

As a Team Lead and Software Engineer, I led a group of software developers in a professional services team that was tasked with customizing ATM banking software to the needs of clients in the U.S and Canada. Making timely deliveries of software updates while managing multiple clients was a key function. I helped increase client satisfaction by ensuring deadlines were met and by negotiating changes in an open manner that was beneficial to all parties. I also served as mentor to graduating engineers on their path to receiving their Professional Engineering licences.Phoenix Interactive describes itself as: “Industry leader in Windows based multi-vendor ATM software with a focus on targeted marketing and value-added self-service solutions.” With its roots in configurable Kiosk software, the company later branched out into ATM software, disrupting the industry by introducing customized features that improved customer engagement and reinforced brand recognition.

Members of the millennial workforce are often referred to as digital natives. As I’ve been championing commodity IT solutions for production since 1997, I see myself as a broadcast IT native. As part of the media systems group in IT, I worked closely with the News operations department to implement a national newsroom system that brought automation and common editorial tools to all newsrooms across the country. I also helped design and build the News computer support department. Throughout, I played a lead consulting and implementing role on many early broadcast initiatives, including: Parkervision automation, newsroom system evaluations, graphic systems RFPs and the initial desktop editing project. I helped break the stigma of the reliability surrounding the use of commodity computer hardware in broadcast critical systems.As the team lead for Elections, I had direct production involvement while covering dozens of elections, political conventions and special events for News. I was concurrently the lead developer, project manager and CBC technical representative on the media election consortium during this time. Notably, I helped write the first graphics automation interface to VizRT at CBC and in one weekend developed a web archive for iNEWS that remained in production for 10 years.

This was my first job as a Software Engineer and it was here that I received my P.Eng. licence. In the two years I worked here, our ambitious little team competed with a rival American division that was 10 times our size, ultimately outperforming them by an order of magnitude in billings. Our secret: We delivered while they considered.Roadware is a small civil engineering company that produces road quality evaluation equipment used to collect data for Geographic Information Systems and other Infrastructure Management Systems.

As a summer intern, I was assigned a number duties ranging from AutoCad drawings, writing and evaluating construction tenders, supervising construction projects and even designing tennis courts and parking lots. I returned to this job each summer throughout University. To this day, whenever I pull my car into a spot, I take a moment to remember the parking lot designer: if I don’t who will?
