  Current activities include managing the day to day operations in our mineralogy lab. Key instruments include a JEOL JXA-8530 Field Emission Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (2020), Cameca SX-100 Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (1996), JEOL IT500 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (2018), Zeiss EVO-50 Scanning Electron Microscope (2004) and Panalytical Xpert Pro Xray Diffractometer (2008). Both EPMAs are equipped with 5 wavelength dispersive x-ray detectors and both SEMs are equipped with Oxford Instruments Energy Dispersive X-ray detectors that run on the AZTEC software platform.Historically the mineralogy section has provided analytical support to the Ontario Geological Survey in the form of high quality quantitative mineral chemistry that is used to promote exploration for important commodities in the province of Ontario.Our team in the mineralogy section has recently been working hard on an in-house VB macro that is capable of automatically classifying minerals based on energy dispersive x-ray signatures acquired from heavy mineral concentrates using our SEMs. The goal here is twofold; first to determine the general mineralogy of the HMCs; and secondly to identify minerals in the HMCs that may be associated with critical elements. By developing this capability, we can rapidly analyze and classify heavy mineral concentrates associated with alluvium and till samples collected throughout the Province of Ontario.
