My work in this area contributed to design team and company success.Following a company downsize, I project managed the transition from a company sponsored CAD support and design kit team to a vendor-based support structure. I continued the Place & Route CAD support for company engineers interfacing with CAD vendors, and built and tested standard cell design kits. I created an intricate Place & Route CAD tool software bug and enhancement database monitoring software problems and providing feedback to CAD vendors driving enhancements and improved software control.

Provided technical design and development assistance to company and customer physical design engineers for complex CAD systems used to create semiconductor physical Place & Route designs in an Application Engineering role, interfacing with Avanti Corp., our Place & Route CAD tool vendor.I recognized a need for a new engineering group to support the complex Place & Route CAD and presented this need to management offering to define, develop and manage the new group. Management agreed and I was promoted to technical manager.Taking on more responsibility, my technical team grew into a team of engineers supporting standard cell library development, standard cell design kit development and physical design CAD tool bug and enhancement tracking. I frequently presented critical software bugs and needed enhancements to Avanti engineering teams driving our partnership.

I quickly became proficient in the AT&T internal Place & Route system and was asked to provide training for new company employees at the first remote AT&T design center in Sunnyvale, CA. I accepted the assignment and spent 9 months as a Place & Route methodology and CAD tool trainer, developing my abilities to define methodology and teach.Following the California assignment, I presented to management a need for a company-wide Place & Route applications engineering role and offered to fill that role. Management agreed and I began supporting Place & Route engineers throughout the company and driving tool enhancements and methodology improvements working closely with tool developers. I created a Place & Route training manual and training class and trained all new Place & Route engineers. As AT&T moved into a commercial-based design services model, I was asked to train Western Digital engineers. This resulted in an on-site assignment at Western Digital in Irvine CA. that was extended to a year and a half. Following this assignment, I continued to support AT&T engineers as a Place & Route applications engineer.Ultimately, AT&T moved to a vendor-based CAD support model and I was asked to evaluate Place & Route software to replace the AT&T internal CAD. I recommended a CAD system from a new start-up ArcSys Inc., stressing a partnership would allow us an inside track on tool development for our needs. Management agreed and a long and successful partnership was forged. I see one of my greatest accomplishments as driving this tool development to ultimately evolve into the state-of-the-art IC physical design and timing closure CAD system from Synopsys Corp. (IC Compiler) used world-wide today
