Dave arrived at Zayo to discover that customer support for its Cloud BU was failing, customers were in in open rebellion due to violations of SLAs, billing errors, and non-delivered services, resulting in a high rate of customer churn. He set to work using all of his technical and leadership skills to triage the existing situation both at the organizational level and with each customer experiencing problems to end the rebellion, and rebuild and retool the department to prevent its recurrence. This task required Dave to dig into his full range of skills including technical analyses of support failures and corrective measures, sales account management to personally triage and resolve customer pain points, and organization assessment and building to create an organization operating in competence from the top down with new job descriptions for all reporting levels, re-interviewing all management and employees, and replacing staff that were not qualified to provide a customer-centric support experience. Dave led creation of new support procedures to ensure service delivery and applied continuous improvement for processes and metrics. Dave led the development of a quality-centric team both by setting the mission and by example. -

He automated bare-metal provisioning using automation tools including Hashicorp Terraform, Digital Rebar, VMWare, and Morpheus Data. He created an RFP for orchestration frameworks including data gathering, scoring, POCs, and contract negotiations. He then produced a complete POC and implementation document for cloud orchestration at Zayo, including use cases, evaluation criteria and a road-map for implementing Morpheus Data’s product. He was also responsible for the installation, management and administration of AzureStack, including a critical use case encyclopedia for Microsoft certification. In order to position Zayo for future business, he researched how machine learning, when coupled with orchestration and monitoring frameworks, could be used to decrease provisioning time and reduce headcount and evaluated ML-based monitoring systems for predictive failure analysis and filter spurious alerts. -

Cio And First Employee HiredNetsuite Jul 1999 - 2001Austin, Tx, UsDave had just completed a lengthy consulting project for Fujitsu-PC and was looking forward to taking the summer off when he was approached by a recruiter who said that Larry Ellison was creating a competitor to QuickBooks for the web. This new company would be called NetLedger, which later became NetSuite. During the interview, he learned that his objective was to create a product that could accommodate 1,000,000 users and run on a PC based infrastructure using the Oracle database. At the time, nothing like this had been done before and he liked the innovation and creativity that would be needed to meet the challenge. In this position, Dave was responsible for the design, build-out and operation of a data center that could accommodate the business objectives of the company. It was up in 15 months, including site selection, network design, application hosting architecture and design, equipment procurement, installation, and testing. In addition, his team was responsible for running the NetSuite software service with greater than 99.9% uptime, administering all internal IT systems, providing cyber security for the company and its services, and all other IT operations. -
