Cymbus Bioscience Ltd., Southampton, UKSenior Production Manager (1993-1994)Responsible for all aspects of upstream and downstream manufacturing, and liaison with Quality Control to ensure that production targets were met. Supervision of three senior scientists and three technicians. Liaison with contract customers.• Introduced new SOPs and documentation to meet the needs of customers working to GLP/GMP.• Improved process controls using ELISA and immunoelectrophoresis techniques.• Developed product range to include labelled, fragmented, and endotoxin-free antibodies.

Responsible for all aspects of upstream production of milligram to multi-gram quantities of MAbs. General laboratory administration and supervision of three technical staff. Preparation and submission of contract proposals and reports. • Reorganized in-house and contract cell banking facility, with development of an on-line database and expansion of contract services to include primary and tumour cell lines.• Introduced hollow-fibre technologies which were influential in a large increase in capacity while reducing consumable costs by 60%.• Developed new MAbs for Cymbus catalogue and contract customers.• Negotiated consumables contracts with savings of 20-30% in the first year.

Deputy Director Heterohybridoma Laboratory (1988-1990)Working on the application of heterohybridoma techniques to prepare non-rodent MAbs to peptide and steroid hormones and other small molecules. Responsible for the routine administration and maintenance of the laboratory, supervision and teaching of technical staff, graduate and post-graduate students in cell culture and assay procedures.• Successfully applied, jointly, for two large grants.• Involved in the negotiation of the commercial exploitation of MAbs developed in the laboratory and responsible for the supply of these antibodies to customers.Researched the development of sheep and cattle MAbs to steroid hormones, which were then used successfully in vitro to immunomodulate reproductive performance.• Instrumental in the design, establishment and control of the AFRC/MRC Heterohybridoma Laboratory, and subsequently appointed Deputy Director.• Prepared MAbs from sheep, cattle, and rabbits to a wide range of antigens in collaboration with colleagues within and outside the Department.• Awarded British Veterinary Association’s Centenary Silver Medal in 1988 for the publication showing the greatest promise in the field of veterinary medicine.
