Profile bio

About Dave Hooks

I have broad experience in both telecommunications and information security. Although I have excelled in a variety of business roles, my real passion is research and development. I have spent the last 20 years developing various information security products in small companies where I have been able to do a lot of hands-on work (which I enjoy). I am an innovator, a perfectionist, and a hard worker. Virtually all of the products that I have helped to create were the first of their kind. Ideally, I would like to find a technically oriented position in a company engaged in the development of information security products or services.Key Qualifications:- Extensive experience verifying security compliance using a variety of security configuration checklists including PCI, USGCB, HIPAA, CIS, DISA STIG's.- Extensive experience in threat detection and forensic analysis working with many high profile customers in intelligence agencies, finanical institutions, media companies, health care facilities, Department of Defense, and the Sochi Olympics.- Extensive experience creating and testing cyber attack techniques used to measure the effectiveness of customer security controls via automated penetration testing.- Experience using a wide variety of security and penetration testing tools (Metasploit, Mimikatz, Powersploit, Volatility, SCAP, ZAP, etc.)- Over 40 years product development experience (telecommunications products and information security products)- Extensive management experience including managing distributed teams in multiple countries and timezones- Deep background in Product Management (opportunity identification, competitive analysis, business case preparation, product roadmaps, feature prioritization, industry standards)- Proven track record as an innovator with multiple awards and patents (first DSL modem, first packet based end office, pioneer in anomaly based cyber threat detection)- Strong customer communications skills (verbal, written, presentations)

Leading Product Development and Product Management for Nehemiah’s Exploit Quantifier (EQ) product. My role includes the following duties:Management - Managed a small offshore development and product test team to develop new features and content.Development - Personally implemented and tested a wide variety of cyber attack techniques using various languages (e.g. batch scripts, powershell scripts, VBA scripts, C++) and tools (e.g. Metasploit, Powersploit, Mimikatz, ZAP). I personally implemented over 200 attack techniques or about 85% of the Mitre ATT&CK matrix.Product Management - Prepared all EQ product documentation and release documentation. Performed numerous customer demonstrations in support of the Sales team.

Aug 2016 - Present

Chief Technical Officer

Triumfant Inc.

Founded Triumfant Inc. and raised approximately $10 million in venture capital. Triumfant's flagship product was AtomicEye, an endpoint protection solution designed to discover and remediate cyber threats that evaded signature based products. AtomicEye was based on a unique anomaly detection technology. In this approach hundreds of thousands of data points were periodically gathered from every machine in an enterprise (e.g. registry, file hashes, processes, etc.). This data was then used to compute an "Adaptive Reference Model" that allowed unusual changes in the environment to be detected with high accuracy and a relatively low noise level. The anomalies were then filtered and and correlated to produce alerts accompanied by an automatic forensic analysis. My duties included the following:Engineering Management - Managed a team of 10-15 engineers engaged in the development, testing, delivery, and support of AtomicEye. I also developed the processes for software development and release management.Research - Invented and patented the anomaly detection and remediation techniques that represented the core intellectual property for the company.Filter Development - I was personally responsible for creating approximately 4,000 recognition filters. The filters allowed anomalous changes to be recognized as specific types of attack techniques. I also developed a number of tools that AtomicEye used to automatically gather additional information about a potential threat (memory forensics, file capture, process tree, etc.) and to remediate harmful changes.Product Management - Formulated, prioritized, and executed the AtomicEye product roadmap. Also authored and edited all product documentation. Performed hundreds of product demonstrations.
