The Technical Services division was rapidly changing, through acquisitions and new fiber deployments, and I was responsible for building new departments from the ground up, including the Service and Network Operations team, the Enterprise Architecture team, and the Business Intelligence and Reporting team. My departments provided KPIs to track performance and service level objectives for the company's networks and service delivery teams. I also worked with others in the company to create a Culture Committee, which focused on the concerns of coworkers and provided data and suggestions for improvement.

I discovered my passion for leading others and in 2015, gained responsibility for two additional departments: IT and CATV. This was a big change for me, as people became my focus instead of networks and equipment. The majority of my time was spent working with department managers, attending meetings, diagramming networks, and creating new processes. I created another internal training course, this time on Wifi and home networking, and gave a presentation at another conference. By the end of my time in this role, I also gained another department (the NOC) and helped build and manage the Data Management Office (DMO) team.

My management responsibilities officially began when the company hired more people to support the IP networks. As a department manager, I was responsible for everything related to the IP networks, including staffing, capital and P&L budget management, vendor relations, RFPs, network growth, maintenance, redundancy and support. During this time, I created internal training to help the rest of the company better understand IP networking and also gave a presentation at a national conference.

The first few years of my career at GPC were largely spent learning the different components needed to provide internet service from the national carriers to individual, rural customers. During this time, I suggested to management that GPC train internal staff on IP networking to save the company in consulting costs. They agreed and sent me to dozens of classes and conferences to hone my skills. I received several certifications, including the Microsoft MCSE (Windows NT 4.0), Cisco CCNA, Cisco CCNP, and the EC-Council CEH qualification. The internet was gaining popularity and the company's network and customer base was rapidly expanding.
