Profile bio

About Dave. Kahn

I have 30 years of reactor operations experience with a variety of reactors including pressurized water reactors, Liquid Metal Fast Breeders (EBR-II), TRIGA's (NRAD), and the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). My operating experience is with a variety of systems ranging from compressed air, cooling water, high pressure steam, power generation both diesel and steam, refrigeration, cryogenics, gas purification and others. I've also been responsible for mechanical and electrical maintenance items ranging from instrument calibrations to rebuilding air compressors and refilling Freon systems. I have spent the last 30 years qualified on all aspects of the lockout/tag out, confined space entry (both entrant and attendant) and conduct of operations. I am currently rigging and crane qualified. I have lifted a variety of loads up to 40 ton nuclear waste casks utilizing flying bridge and trolley cranes as well as jibs and automatic center of gravity lifting devices. As a shift operator I was responsible for all aspects of facility operation on back shifts, which included troubleshooting and repair of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, remotely operated valves, programmable logic controllers, and distributed control systems. In 2016 I transitioned away from rotating shiftwork and accepted a job in facility support as an operations specialist. This increased my responsibilities in the arena of work planning, work coordination, as well as exposure to subcontractors and outside of facility work control. I also became the system administrator for eSOMS (electronic Shift Operations Management System) during a time when the system was being upgraded as well as expanded. In the last few years we have upgraded from version 5.4.02 to version 6.1.1 as well as expanding eSOMS from just the Narrative logs module to also utilizing Operator Rounds module and Mobile logs and rounds modules.

Listed skills include Management, Nuclear Operations, Troubleshooting, Electronics, and 8 others.

It was the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor part of the Integral Fast Reactor project. I qualified in all aspects of power plant operation and fuel handing. After EBR-II was shutdown and upon completion of defueling the reactor in 1998, I became part of the Sodium Processing Facility which we built and operated for the purpose of processing all the liquid metal sodium used as coolant in the reactor. After a few years I transferred to the Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) and gained remote handling experience with master/slave manipulators. As a member of the process crew I also qualified in Cask Handling and Waste Characterization as well as in-cell operations including many areas of metalography. After 2 years I transferred HFEF's Facility Operations crew as a shift Technician and back to systems operations type work. I also qualified as a reactor operator on the NRAD reactor (TRIGA) and on the NGEN particle accelerator because their work load was so small a full time operator was not necessary. I also qualified and stood watch as Facility Area Supervisor handling all aspects of facility work control. Show less
