  I've been with the Blues since college graduation. I started as an auditor with a degree in Accounting, successfully passed the CPA exam, and then spent many years travelling to hospitals to perform compliance reviews for Medicare and BCBSM reimbursement rules. I later transitioned from auditing to more technical and analytical work including hospital industry cost-finding and profit margin analysis to support hospital contracting. My duties today largely involve claim system review and enhancements (including review of mainframe COBOL coding), summarization and automation of claim-related statistics in SQL Server and DB2, and development of future state reporting environments. My experience as an auditor helped me understand the business and reimbursement aspects of healthcare and I've since developed a detailed knowledge of medical claims (from what goes on a bill to how a claim is priced). This gives me a complete understanding of hospital reimbursement from the time a claim is first generated to completion of the revenue cycle when a fiscal settlement is completed.
