I can't remember the exact date, but it was somewhere in the late 80's or early 90's when I first met Dave. He came to our company, a software maker, as a technical representative for a hardware company. We were trying to migrate a large ERP product from a proprietary operating system to UNIX, and Dave helped us understand what UNIX was all about and how to get our product running under it. We were pretty much all in awe of his technical skills even back then. We knew a good thing when we saw it, and eventually persuaded Dave to leave the hardware vendor and came to work for us. For a time somewhere around 1998-1999 he reported to me as a senior technical advisor in a group of software architects and engineers. In that capacity he proposed a number of forward-thinking improvements to the processes my department used in our development efforts. After he left my group he headed up a small, highly focused team that built a software tool that we're still using it today in a production environment to translate flat files to xml and vice versa. Membership in Dave's group was a coveted role in the company because those who worked with him were doing interesting work in a fast-moving environment under the guidance of great mentor. Of all the technical people I've known in my professional life - and that’s a lot of people over the past twenty-seven years - Dave is in the top tier. I have truly never known him to let a technical problem get the better of him. So he's great technically, but that's not really what sets him apart from all the other good technical guys out there. Dave's defining characteristic is that his approach is always organic, holistic. In figuring out how to address an issue, he looks at the whole environment in which the problem exists, not just the problem itself. When you're developing software products that you sell and support you have to live with your decisions for a long time, so planning and designing with the whole environment in mind is an extremely valuable characteristic. Dave also fits well into a team, both in a lead role or as a supporting team member. He understands the importance of relationships and made a lot of friends in the time he worked with our company.
