Started my carrier in the trucking industry by working in the shop as a mechanics helper in 1965 during school vacations. My father owned Crown Cartage and Storage, a union trucking company that at it highest had 46 drivers. Once I was able to legally drive, I drove the tow truck and the gas truck when people were on vacation.I got my chauffeurs license when I became 18 and at 21 was number 47 on the Crown seniority list. After one year I was laid off. Dad thought I was going back to tri c, but I worked casual for about a year.(As long as I was a union member I could go to another trucking company that needed drivers as long as all their men were working)..Worked at Cooper-Jarrett, Murphy, Navajo and Southern Express. It was 1973 and I bought my first truck. A 1963 B model Mack and a trailmobile trailer.In January I was a broker (now called owner operator) for All Industrial Cartage. Spent the next 14 years there hauling steel through out the stateof Ohio and the city of Cleveland. Then went in business with my dad and formed Shumac Inc. 10 years later I worked at D&R for a year, went to Milan Express when they came into town, Estes as outbound supervisor,Mid States Express as day operations supervisor/dispatcher for 3 years, and the last 10 years at Vitran Express. Started as a road driver and came into the city when I could get a bid. Once Vitran bought PJAX and had to move to their terminal I had enough and retired in 2012. I can proudly say I have had 41 years in trucking, and there is not much I haven't done!!!!! I also have rubbed elbows with some very fine colleagues,and also met some duds too.
