The project is a collaboration of several institutes across Europe, lasting over a decade with a non-staff budget of €32 million and involving about 600 FTEs of effort.• Stakeholder Management including: regular reporting to ESO on progress and finance; working within STFC’s governance framework by reporting to and working with the UK oversight committees; meeting with the Consortium Management Board which represents the institutes making up the consortium.• Working closely with the Principal Investigator to lead and manage all activities across the consortium. • Managing the project office and instrument engineering activities via the team of System Engineers, Lead Discipline Engineers and Scientists. • Leading and coordinating the activities of the subsystem work-packages via the Institute Project Managers. • Monitoring and managing the overall schedule of the project. • Creating, tracking and managing the finances across the consortium.• Maintaining the project risk register and using it to anticipate issues then avoid or mitigate them.Deputy Project Manager HARMONI Consortium & Institute Project Manager UKATC (2015-2020)• Deputising for the project manager, my specific areas of responsibility included establishing and maintaining a process for the financial management of the consortium. I developed a system to track and report how both the ESO and member contributions are spent and used this process to manage the cost of the system across the consortium.• Coordinating the UKATCs contribution to the HARMONI project including managing the delivery of the UKATC work packages; managing UKATC project resources and budgets.

A member of the Commercial Proof of Concept panel which reviews proposals for funding to develop technology originating inside STFC towards a commercial product or servicePI and Project Manager for the Retinal Densitometer (ReD) project (2013-2018)Leading a project to develop a retinal imaging device for early detection of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the UK’s leading cause of blindness. An advanced prototype a commercial diagnostic device was built and tested is currently being prepared for use in a registered medical trial.My role included• Leading the consortium clinical researchers at Cardiff and City of London Universities, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Bristol Eye Hospital and STFC.• Setting targets and direction.• Managing the project resources.• Liaising with the sponsor, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

SMT (part of Siemens Medical Solutions) is a major designer and manufacturer of the superconducting magnets which are the largest component in a Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI) device. SMT manufacture roughly a third of all the superconducting MRI magnets in the world. A wide variety of technologies are exploited from the physics of low temperature superconductors for the magnet coils, through mass optimised structures to support tens or hundreds of tonnes of force, to design and coding approval of vacuum vessels and refrigeration to keep everything at a temperature of 4 Kelvin. In my time with SMT I performed a variety of roles:Senior Project Manager (2005-2007)I managed a large cross functional team with 15 engineers working for me full-time as well as directing those from many other departments (e.g. logistics, manufacturing, service, quality, finance) and a budget of over £2M per annum. I worked across all areas of the business as well as with vendors & customers to deliver a new product from concept to product launch. The project included product concept, design, prototype builds and production line preparation. Highlights included:• Implementing a new gated product development process.• Integrating the magnet development team more closely with the MRI system team (based in Germany), to give a more cost and performance optimised overall system. Facilitating both groups understanding of the product and development processes.• Reaching agreement and getting the buy-in of all the stakeholders as to technical specifications, schedule, cost targets and production methods. Communicating progress upwards, downwards and sideways.• Understanding the full product cost structure, setting appropriate targets and then tracking progress. My methodology improved the company’s abilities to track product costs and was adopted for future projects.

Support Stream Manager (2004-2005)Managing a team of 10 engineers in order to support the production and customer service departments in resolving technical issues. At the same time we were responsible for the cost reduced redesign of existing products. My biggest achievement was to build a high degree of trust with the many internal and external customers so that we were able to work constructively together to resolve issues as well as proactively prevent problems arising. Technical Project Manager /Systems Engineer (2003-2004)Coordinating the technical work on a particular project within the engineering department. Dealing with the definition of requirements for the magnet. Also part of the role was to look at the system engineering of both the magnet and the whole MRI system to optimise performance and cost.Shim and Software Team Leader (2001-2003)I was responsible for the development of the magnet shimming technology as well as remotely supporting technicians and customers all over the world. A major part of this was the project management of a year-long software development, using both internal and external developers. I was also line manager to five people, responsible for recruitment, discipline, support and facilitating their personal development.Engineer Physicist (1999-2001)I worked on the design of components, processes and software for MRI magnets as well as supporting customers around the world.
