Dave retired as Vice President, Asia-Pacific Technology, after more than 25 years with RGA Reinsurance Company. He is a former engineer (UCONN School of Engineering), actuary (Connecticut Mutual, General American, RGA), writer (technical books, and data science publications), inventor (patents granted in United States, Japan, India, South Africa), and technology evangelist (several presentations in Asia, Australia, Canada, and the United States). He currently teaches Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning at Maryville University, in St. Louis, Missouri; and he continues to be heavily involved in professional activities. Currently, Dave is a council member for the Society of Actuaries Predictive Analytics and Futurism section and he has been editor of their newsletter for the past ten years. Dave cuts through the jargon and hype of IT, artificial intelligence, and machine learning and shows his clients how they can overcome obstacles and leverage their own expertise by selecting or building technology-based tools for them.He is co-inventor and the original architect of an underwriting expert system in use in dozens of countries and many languages; and he is co-inventor on recent patents to combine machine and human intelligence in a synergistic manner.

I officially retired from RGA as VP - Technology (Asia-Pacific) on a Friday in September of 2007 and returned on Monday as a consultant to our Vice-Chair.Retirement was wonderful! Working half time (only 40 hours per week!) and abdicating all former management roles liberated me to contribute with creative technology-based solutions to a host of fascinating actuarial issues. My primary areas of focus were Data Science, Advanced Analytics and Predictive Modeling, Machine Learning, Electronic Medical Records, Complexity Science, Modeling Techniques, Corporate Modeling, Life Company Taxes, Underwriting, and Structured Finance. I recommend or invent technology tools that enable automation of tasks that otherwise would impede the progress of actuaries and other financial professionals. A recent innovation was the co-invention of a business process utilizing various complexity science tools for better underwriting in an augmented intelligence environment (U.S. Patent 8775218).Also, I served as a Technology Evangelist for sharing of information among actuaries and IT associates throughout RGA. It's fun to network with kindred spirits and promote the reuse of tools developed in various areas.I am a former Chair of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Technology Section, and a former Chair of the Actuary of the Future Section. Currently I am a council member and newsletter editor for the Forecasting and Futurism Section. I've written several published articles on genetic algorithms and other complexity science topics; and taught classes to actuaries, accountants, underwriters and other insurance professionals in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Asia.
