If the solution doesn't exist, let's build it !I love writing software, and over the years I have not only written commercial programs, but have delved into all sorts of software back alleys. Fascinating stuff. See further on for some examples.I especially enjoy writing internet software of various types (note: NOT web applications!). These are programs that run on the Windows Desktop, and usually perform various tasks, such as automated screen scraping, data analysis, form submission etc. Basically, anything you can do when browsing the web yourself, but with 1000 of them happening simultaneously, at 1000 times the speed that you can do, making instant decisions, guided by built-in intelligence.

  Being self-employed has allowed me to tackle projects that were just interesting, without any expectation of commercialising them. They have all contributed to giving me a rich and varied experience.Some projects undertaken over the years :Beltel data transfer system (1992 – 1999, part time)A large, commercial-grade software suite, geared to perform automated data transferthrough Telkom's Beltel (Videotex) system. Written for MS-DOS, first in Pascal, then in Turbo C++ forDOS. Much of the functionality of Beltel was undocumented, and had to be discovered byown-design software tools. I was the first person in the country to produce software thatused its bulk update facility.Xenix version of Beltel data transfer system (1993)Produced a remote file compatible version of the above project for running on Xenix. Alsoexperimented with doing the same on Linux.Audio recording / playback system (1996) (Non-commercial)A program that continously recorded audio to disk, and then allowed the user to selectspecific passages to be retained. Involved writing a file system that was superimposed onWindows.Jigsaw Puzzle Solver (Non-commercial)A fun project that solved a real-life jigsaw puzzle that was proving difficult to solve in thenormal way. Involved image analysis, shape description and shape matching.DSTV Music Capture (2004) (Non-commercial)A system for MS-DOS (for speed of execution) in C, that interfaced to PC internalhardware, to capture music packets arriving from a DSTV decoder set to a DMX musicselection (packets were already decoded by the time they arrived, nothing illegal !) Algorithmic trading with genetic algorithms (Non-commercial, non-viable)Experimented with algorithmic trading, specifically using genetic algorithms and geneticprogramming, for approximately a year. Used Metastock historic data to try and produce asystem that produced better results than the average.It has all been good fun !
