Colleagues describe him as "Over the years, I've realized that I learned so much from Dave's leadership that I never truly understood until much later in life. A quiet, servant style leadership that showed genuine concern for his employees while still holding them to account for their work. One lesson really has stuck with me was during our time together at WNCB in Minnesota. We were promoting a concert involving the band Burlap to Cashmere. All of us at the station were excited for the show, as none of us had seen the band before, and we were all dying to see them live. The night of the show, our computer system crashed, and I as the night DJ I had to stay and run a live show instead of running the voice tracked log we had programmed so I could attend the concert. I was, shall we say, unthrilled. Yet it was what it was, I was the night guy, so I stayed behind. A few hours later, I was shocked when a pizza guy shows up at the door with a pizza and soda, that I found Dave had ordered for me since I was stuck at the station. Then after the concert started, he called me when they started playing my favorite track, so I could hear it live, with Dave telling me that at least for a moment I could be there with all of them. That night, with those few actions, Dave showed me the mark of a true leader in taking care of his folks. He knew how crushed I was not to go to the show, but he took steps to show me that he valued me on his team, that he understood how I was feeling, and that it mattered to him that I was still a part of the team's event. That lesson has stuck with me for almost 25 years. At the time, it didn't seem like that huge a lesson. In hindsight, it's helped me show the same kindness and concern to hundreds of employees through the years."
