I’m the Canadian Executive Director of Kids Connection Haiti and an airline pilot. I started with KCH just after the terrible earthquake that took place very close to Port-Au-Prince in January of 2010. In fact, I was in Port-Au-Prince helping another NGO to provide medical care and other assistance to those affected by the earthquake when Astrid asked me to join KCH. There was then, and there still is, a huge need to help young adults between the ages of about 18 and 25 to transition from living in an institution or in abject poverty to an independent life in which they can contribute positively to their communities and can help others in their family to climb out of poverty too. I joined KCH because I saw the potential of the KCH model to truly change the lives of a lot of people, both directly and indirectly. That model has only grown more refined, more complete and more successful since KCH's humble beginning through the effort, dedication and generosity of a lot of volunteers, donors and Haitian staff members. I’m so fortunate to be a part of it. I'm sure I benefit from my involvement with KCH almost as much as our students. I do it because I see it as an obligation to help these deserving and high-potential young people – who I know would help me if I needed it. It’s also a huge source of satisfaction that I’m spending my time and effort on something so tangible and worthwhile.I’ve learned a lot too. I’ve learned how far a dollar can go if it’s given to someone who really understands its value. I’ve learned that I can miss a few dollars myself each month and still live very comfortably; maybe even better for it. I’ve learned how important a good education is and the significant, positive impact a job has on one's self worth as well as one's standard of living and happiness.
