After 16 years in the Army, and having been wounded in Iraq, I returned to the family farm in the summer of 2008. As a small fruit growing business in a difficult market it became clear we needed to diversify. Having looked at many options camping looked like the best opportunity and so in late 2016 I joined Lex Cook in Fallow Fields Camping and we opened our first site at the end of the farm road.Since then we have grown to 3 sites throughout the South and East and have learnt a huge amount about how to plan, set up, operate and manage camping and glamping. This includes navigating the convoluted planning system, understanding the importance of a robust sewage system (!), managing customers on site and most importantly what the market wants and how to deliver it.Having spent 7 years getting to understand rural tourism we now want to help other farmers as they try to keep their family business afloat in trying times. There are many advisers out there with a vested interest in trying to sell something but we aim to give straight forward advice to help farms and estates make the right choice for them.
