I do consulting, training, and contract software development work using Scala, Python, JavaScript and Java, and I teach programming to young people in grades 3–12 and those at university.

I started at Happy Valley Elementary with 3rd grade Lafayette History and 4th grade Comet Hale-Bopp Web site projects. I “mastered” the Happy Valley Web site for awhile, then moved to Stanley Middle School. I ran Stanley’s Web site for awhile, and helped the administration with various projects around the student information systems. I wrote a Web app that some of the teachers say they preferred to what the school has today, Eagle Aeries and School Loop. In early 2000 I met Music Director Bob Athayde and started helping in his amazing music department, with the young musicians, and with technology. We developed DBSchools Music Gradebook and have been using that for many years to track the students’ progress through a series of music books that they are tested on.

I teach computer programming to grades 3–8, two half-days per week. We have studied JavaScript, Python and Scala, and p5.js. For physical computing we’ve used Circuit Playground Express and micro:bits, using MakeCode and CircuitPython. Starting in 2021-22, we’ve been using the Beauty and Joy of Computing curriculum and Snap!. I taught younger kids as well, in after-school classes, where we also used Scratch and Tynker.

I developed software for the brand automation platform Naming Matters.

I was delighted to help improve Open Data Kit, https://opendatakit.org/, a “free and open-source set of tools which help organizations author, field, and manage mobile data collection solutions”. From http://nafundi.com/about/: “The platform has been used by thousands of organizations like the Gates Foundation, USAID, World Health Organization, and the Jane Goodall Institute to collect hundreds of millions of data points.”

Did some very interesting scientific Scala programming with Bill Venners for one of his clients. Much of the work involved processing satellite images and elevation data.

Enhanced a Python/Django/AngularJS application used by language researchers.

Front- and back-end Java and JavaScript and student information system work. My most visible contribution is the client side of the seating chart application.

Worked on a variety of interesting projects in Scala, Java, Python, Lift, and JavaScript, especially the vCloud Usage Meter. Interfaced programmatically with a variety of VMware products, including vCenter Server, vCloud Director, vRealize Operations Manager, Horizon DaaS, and Site Recovery Manager. Led a small team of developers through creating several versions of Usage Meter.

I taught computer programming using Visual Basic, Java, Squeak, Scratch, Tynker, Kojo, Alice, and Python to kids in grades 4-9 in a summer program in Pleasant Hill, California. I have a very nice letter of recommendation from the director I served for 23 summers, which I would be happy to share.

Developed a customer service Web application using JavaServer Faces.

Worked with a great team on a new blog parser, using Python.

Worked with Adele Goldberg (Xerox PARC Smalltalk developer) and Dennis Allison (Stanford EE380) and a great engineering team on interesting educational software, using Python and Smalltalk.

The Technology Task Force reviewed the City's information systems and made recommendations to the City Council on improvements necessary to meet the needs of Lafayette residents.

Programmed enhancements to the checking accounts system for a year, and then worked in technical services, supporting application programmers and writing TSO CLISTs, ISPF dialogs, and the like.
