Computer scientist with a long history of working on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in financial markets: worked for HP and for Deutsche Bank; and I've been a professor at MIT, Southampton, and Bristol. For more than 25 years my research and teaching has been in financial engineering and financial technology ("FinTech" and/or "TechFin"). To do this right often involves highly data-intensive work, so-called "big data" or data science. Currently Director of the University of Bristol's Intelligent Systems Labs (130+ people working on leading-edge research); and also the Programme Director (academic-in-charge) for our highly popular MSc in Data Science, a degree that I led the design and delivery of, as part of a family of related MSc degrees, the next of which is our MSc in Financial Technology with Data Science, launching Oct.2021. Previously I've also worked as a lead expert witness in legal cases. Served in a major civil case concerning IP dispute in the Chancery Division of the London High Court; and in a criminal case at Southwark Crown Court (initial prosecution; SCPO trial; and confiscation hearing).Feb.2016-Aug.2018: Academic Director for the University of Bristol's £350M Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus project, a new campus development to the east of Bristol. Overall responsibility for visioning/initiating the education & skills and research & innovation programmes on the new campus, reporting direct to the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor. July 2015 to June 2017: Head of School, Merchant Venturers School of Engineering (MVSE), University of Bristol (UoB). MVSE is home to UoB's departments of Computer Science, of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and of Engineering Mathematics; it is roughly half of UoB's Faculty of Engineering, with approximately 100 academic staff, 150 researchers, and over 1000 students. October 2005 to March 2014: Director and Principal Investigator, UK National Research & Training Initiative in the Science and Engineering of Large-Scale Complex IT Systems (LSCITS): £10.2M funding from EPSRC. I led the LSCITS Initiative for its entire 8-year lifespan, delivering 250 person-years of effort.
