Product Management is a timeless pursuit but defining the role and adopting it as a distinct profession has only evolved over the past 25 years. Now considered an essential role, we might ask why we did not define the Product Manager role much earlier. I believe it is because the creation of the Product Manager role was and is a response to evolving customer requirements and expectations.Customers now more than ever have choices and those choices drive greater expectations. The bar has been raised and we are no longer competing to meet our customer’s business or lifestyle needs. We are competing to show our customers that we understand them, that we know their vision and that we are best suited to partner with them to drive change and attain success. The modern Product Manager must not only deliver on the service and performance needs of the customer but also on their social and emotional needs. The automobile industry is a good example. A car gets us from point A to point B but it is so much more than that. Automobile Industry Product Managers understand that the automobile is a experience, it is an extension of ourselves and it must meet much more than the service and performance needs of the customer. My passion as a Product Management is delighting customers and mentoring other Product Managers on the role of the Product Manager and how delighting the customer benefits our own business.
