Initially, client engagements were exclusively within the AIX and POWER domain, but gradually my skill set grew to include other flavours of UNIX and Linux, and other platforms such as SPARC and x86. Later on, I tackled roles outside of infrastructure services, acquiring skills, knowledge and concepts from other domains - both from the application and business side. My career has grown organically, learning at every opportunity and amassing plenty of valuable experience along the way.Recently I have progressed into Technical and Solution Architecture, remaining hands-on with engineering and development efforts and thus maintaining my deep technical capabilities.I manage my career through BCS' Continuing Professional Development portal. Mar 2004 - Jan 2016

Senior Enterprise Engineer

London, United Kingdom

Within LBG’s Midrange Exploitation and Governance team, I provide enterprise UNIX and Linux expertise, consultancy and governance to:- projects, during definition and design phases, from across multiple lines of business- service delivery and support functions, such as provisioning, support, maintenance and operations- the wider Group IT community, such as security, monitoring, performance and capacityI also assist IT service delivery in strengthening platform-specific technology roadmaps by:- identifying gaps in capability and overall strategy- providing alternate solutions to remediate said gaps- taking ownership of specific solutions and planning their implementation- enhancing infrastructure management tools and supporting documentation- investigating OpenPOWER and other open source technologies for applicabilityTo date, the following capabilities, and corresponding benefits, have been defined or delivered:- LPM (Live Partition Mobility) for both inactive and active partitions: reducing overall migration times, alleviating capacity issues and freeing-up skilled technicians- Bespoke orchestration and management APIs: de-coupling infrastructure management tooling from platform-specific interfaces and preparing the platform for quicker integrations- SCM (source code management) tooling and associated DevOps practices: addressing problems related to version control, collaborative development and release management

Jun 2014 - Dec 2015

Technical Architect | Solution Architect

Gsk

Brentford, Middlesex

As infrastructure technical lead to a small cross-functional team, whose remit was to re-platform and migrate GSK’s core middleware service, I owned the following work products:- infrastructure solution design- application integration specifications- platform monitoring and application performance management architecture- platform specific inputs into SOA and system lifecycle management solutions- product selections during proof-of-technology and proof-of-concept phases- mentoring and product demosSpecifically, I managed the introduction of the following technologies and capabilities into GSK:- advanced infrastructure virtualization (bringing software licensing costs into budget)- lightweight container technology, associated image templates, shared testing resources and scalable client environments (automating system integration testing and reducing manual errors)- Active Memory Sharing (enabling fully automated capacity management)- server lifecycle management software (reducing maintenance windows and configuration drift)Legacy monitoring was limited in both capability and scope. By implementing monitoring across the entire platform, I was able to build additional value into the platform by designing an application performance management solution that:- aggregated and intelligently reported against said data, allowing service management to visualise service metrics and reduce incident and ticket numbers- allowed technicians to assess system health from different viewpoints, analyse patterns of behaviour through predictive analytics, and remediate issues pro-actively

Jul 2011 - Jun 2014

Aix Architect

South Bank, London

In recognition of LPAR builds failing to meet perceived delivery timescales, the service delivery function moved to a pre-provisioning model. As provisioning technical lead I:- managed the conversion of all automation code, and processes, from engineering to production- ensured our team of 15 onshore/offshore specialists delivered technically consistent builds- co-ordinated the builds of 150+ POWER frames, 3000+ AIX LPARs and 200+ PowerHA clustersServer capacity was under-utilised and poorly optimised for non-production environments. To meet £23m in cost-savings, reduce licensing costs, and enable more flexibility in workload placement, I delivered the following two work items:- engineered and implemented a server hardware pattern that enabled UAT and production to be segregated within the same frame, allowing LPAR densities to double- planned all technical elements for a server optimisation programme, resulting in over 250 CPU's worth of capacity being made available for future workloadsIn a dual effort to maintain SLAs and drive continuous improvement activities, I acted as technical design authority for IT service delivery and provided:- key consultancy and governance around project design workshops, engineering refreshes, standards improvements, quality assurance reviews and service-affecting incidents- consistency, from design through provisioning to operational support, for all builds- appropriate levels of communication between technicians and management
