For me, Design Thinking is a social tool for empathically sharing the limited space and resources of our planet. Through design we journey together, engage, question, learn, and transform. Together, we make space that empowers individual agency toward solving our most challenging collective action issues: social, economic and environmental justice. A radical hope unites us to design a future worth sharing and cultivates our will to share it. I began my career at top architecture firms in the Twin Cities where I was fortunate to work on high-profile, award-winning projects across the globe. There I learned how systems thinking, combined with collective leadership, make an Integrative Design Process possible. Prior to my Integrative Design Leadership role for JLG Architects' eleven offices, I was Design Director and Market Sector Leader at Perkins&Will’s Minneapolis Studio. There I led exceptionally talented interdisciplinary teams on projects that testify to the value of collective achievement: Bell Museum expresses the beauty of bio-diverse sustainability and was honored in 2020 by AIA Minnesota and Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums; Kent State University’s College of Business leverages a Developer-led Public-Private Partnership to elevate campus community, sustainability and equity; University of Minnesota’s Health Sciences Education Center is a “Catalyst for Change” training health professionals in experiential team-based, patient-centered care; Studio IDS integrates research metrics with feedback loops for a dynamic ‘free address’ workplace as lauded by Architectural Record’s ‘Good Design is Good Business’ Award; Great River Energy Headquarters was Minnesota’s first LEED Platinum project and AIA National’s Committee on the Environment celebrated it with a 2009 ‘Top Ten Award’. I further lean into our collective curiosity through teaching, mentoring and community involvement, including 20 years as Adjunct Faculty at the College of Design and 13 years of Board service to AIA Minnesota and the Minnesota Architectural Foundation.
