I am a computer security researcher with a hacker mindset who applies and translates decades of acquired knowledge to serve people with expertise in other domains to help them build and operate more resilient businesses.I spend my time trying to understand how bad people harm others over the internet and finding ways to lessen the damage by the bad guys (on purpose) or the good guys (on accident). I do this as a Computer Security Researcher and an independent security consultant. I've given away much of my knowledge and tools, for free, for years because I believe everyone has a responsibility for helping make the internet a safer place, but they need to learn how from those who have figured out how to do it.I am fascinated by the ways that computer attackers function and how their tools work. It is a constant challenge to understand them and to develop defensive countermeasures and investigative techniques to counter them. I am never bored and have more interesting things to study than there are hours in the day to study them.Specialties: I was the first person to produce detailed technical analyses of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) tools in 2000, was one of the first to study IRC-based botnets, and have compiled one of the largest collections on the web of information about DDoS, cyberwarfare, forensics, and the Active Response Continuum (including "active defense" and "hack back").
