After the aggregation and pre-processing of the data, Microsoft Power BI was used to generate Alarm Management dashboards for the business. These dashboards became an integral part of my recurring alarm management presentations to management.The High-Performance Graphics Initiative provided a different set of challenges. The main purpose of the initiative was to update the process graphics in the control center to be compliant with industry standards, best practices, and the latest in human factors research. While there were some technical hurdles, the largest challenge was getting the acceptance of the rest of the business – as the proposed changes were quite different from the traditional graphics that were used. I joined the Control Systems department at the beginning of a once-in-a-career opportunity. Inter Pipeline was just starting the process of designing, building, and commissioning their Polaris pipeline, and I was able to be involved in every control system aspect of the process. In addition to the ControlLogix platform, I also learned Schneider-Electric’s Quantum, Unity, M340, and M580 platforms. As a SCADA Systems Analyst, I was responsible for the safe and reliable operation of Inter Pipeline’s two Telvent OASyS SCADA systems. I was involved in both day-to-day and long-term support and maintenance of the SCADA software, the Unix operating system that they ran on, and the servers and networking hardware architecture for the entire system. My first job out of school was an absolute whirlwind. While I only worked at Matrikon for 11 months, I felt like I had accumulated 5 years’ worth of knowledge. I was mainly tasked with providing support to a particular client that utilized Allen-Bradley’s PLC-5 control system. While it was a dated platform even back then, I thrived on the challenge of learning to master it.
