I worked on contract for E Ink, in a software division that handles certain specific types of software engineering problems. I worked on E Ink Prism Design Studio which is a software application used to create animations for E Ink Prism tiles. I designed and implemented the part of the user interface used for designing tile animations. This software was used to design the animations for Color Changing BMW which went viral in early 2022.

I was the lead user interface engineer for Sansar, Linden Lab's new Virtual Reality platform that lets users create their own 3D virtual worlds that can be entered by multiple users over the internet.

Sunnyvale, California

Worked as a contractor at a medical device company where I was a lead developer of a C++/Qt-based cross-platform (Windows/Linux) application that handles medical device data acquisition and hardware control. The application includes 3D and 2D graphical displays of real-time data. Worked on multi-threaded data processing support. Worked primarily on-site in Sunnyvale, California.

Worked as a contractor for a trucking transportation broker to migrate a Microsoft Access database application to C#/.NET with a cloud-based Microsoft Azure SQL Server database. Extensive redesign was done based on customer specifications. Added an EDI document processing system that supports the EDI 204 Motor Carrier Load Tender life cycle. Implemented a Quicken-style Accounting system as part of the new design. Wrote a C# and SQL code generator that supports database table creation and create, read, update, and delete operations for arbitrarily complex EDI documents based on an EDI schema file. Worked remotely.

Remote And On-Site At Customer Locations

Worked as a contractor for John Deere on a graphical user interface designed to control and monitor tractor navigation and operation. Collaborated with other engineers to develop and maintain a set of custom Qt widgets for the Linux-based embedded interface. All development was done in C++/Qt under Ubuntu Linux. Worked on-site near Des Moines, Iowa and remotely.

Berkeley, California

Designed and implemented Compass 2, a multi-threaded, cross-platform remote user interface for the Galileo and Callisto Loudspeaker Management Systems. Designed and implemented the embedded front panel user interface for Galileo. Also worked on remote user interfaces (in Compass 2) for the SIM 3 Audio Analyzer, Column Array Loudspeaker (CAL), Remote Monitoring System (RMS) and various Texas Instruments DSP chips. All development was done with C++/Qt on Windows, OS X and Linux.

Berkeley, California

One of two lead developers of Lyris ListManager, a mailing list management application. Worked on backend multi-threaded C++ code and frontend HTML, Perl, and Tcl code. ListManager was supported by extensive SQL in the backend and frontend and supported Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and PostgreSQL databases. Also worked on MailShield, a server-based anti-spam application.

Seal Beach, California

Maintained and enhanced three graphical display applications that were part of a distributed National Missile Defense simulation system. The displays included a 2D map of the Earth, a 3D animated globe and a performance data plotter. Development was done in C++ under the IRIX operating system on Silicon Graphics computers using X Window System, OpenGL and OpenInventor. Interprocess communication was implemented using a CORBA RPC interface. Also developed a new application that helped navigate and visualize orbital rendezvous scenarios.

Chicago, Illinois

Created several C++ applications to acquire wind tunnel and airfoil data, control experiment operation and process acquired data. The data acquisition application integrated with control software and hardware that dynamically controlled the angle of attack of an airfoil and other experiment devices. Supported graduate student experiments and helped them process and visualize data.
