I predominantly work with satellite radar imagery to map ocean slicks for the purpose of offshore oil exploration and increasingly environmental benchmarking studies. My role includes: • Mapping and interpretation of offshore seepage• Pollution studies and environmental benchmarking• Preparation of service quotes, • Compilation and management of ArcGIS projects for oil and gas sector clients• Presenting products to potential clients• Supervision and training of new staff• Preparation of conference and workshop material• Daily use of GIS software (ArcGIS 10 and TNTmips)• Responsible for webpage management and publicising upcoming studiesI am involved in a number of projects with an emphasis on ocean dynamics, which encompasses the use of satellite radar and optical imagery:• Identification, interpretation and mapping of ocean features (e.g. internal waves, mesoscale eddies)• Identification of offshore infrastructure (i.e. hurricane damaged rigs)• Integration of satellite derived metocean data to aid radar imagery interpretation• Working knowledge of the world oceans and oil industry activities • Collaborating in a Joint Industry Project (WISC) to create a global Internal Wave Atlas to highlight areas prone to internal wave activity• Development of ocean primary productivity studies using optical satellite data.Other project activities include:• Developing synergies between NPA offshore products and other CGG services• Work Package Leader for SubCoast FP7 European Commission project; marketing, sustainability and dissemination of the project; working with various companies from 7 European countries• Writing tenders for European Space Agency projects related to the use of remote sensing in the oil and gas industryI also completed an Open University course in Oceanography to gain a well rounded knowledge on the marine environment and its physical, chemical, biological and geological processes.
Scientific And Technical Research Assistant
I worked for the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) for two years under the Oceans 2025 project, after graduating from my Masters degree in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change at Swansea University. I was involved in several sustained observation activities including the meridional overturning circulation and ARGO profiling floats deployment and coordination. My roles were as follows:• Planning and logistics for hydrographic research cruises• Compiling technical reports for hydrographic research cruises• Participating in research cruises (up to 7 weeks long) occupying trans-ocean hydrographic sections - Cruise JC031; Drake Passage - Cruise JC032; South Atlantic at 24S - Cruise D346; North Atlantic at 24N • Sampling/data collection and support for all scientific teams (physics, chemistry, biology, CFCs), including position of watch leader on my final cruise• Coordinating and planning with partner institutions (i.e. UEA, BODC)• Data handling using Matlab and UNIX/LINUX systems; data analysis and quality checking• Responsible for hydrographic cruise data analysis and dissemination• Creation of web pages for the Ocean Observing and Climate Group
