The Senior Operations Manager manages the work of the Personal Learning Advisors and delivery of student facing operations to help specific cohorts of students, who have been identified in line with the University’s Access, Participation and Success Strategic Framework and in particular the Access and Participation Plan (APP). This is with the aim of helping address areas of disadvantage, improving student success, progression and learning experiences, and helping reduce key awarding gaps. They develop and implement bespoke critical infrastructure and operational systems to allow the specialist PLA service to run effectively and efficiently, enabling the optimum number of student interventions to be achieved and comply with Open University policies. The key areas for development are the use of new platforms for improved delivery, systems for improved processes, reporting, communications and student engagement strategy as well as procedures for student allocation and caseload management.

I led UK Advising and Tutoring as Chair for two years having previously served as Professional Development Chair. This included approving the appointment of a CEO, changing the official status of the organisation and overseeing numerous conferences and festivals. I previously set up a popular webinar series, helped establish a Professional Framework for Personal Tutoring, established international Professional Development Funding Opportunities and helped develop a Postgraduate Certificate in Personal Tutoring. I now continue to serve as a Board Member and Trustee

Elected position as an Executive and Founding Member of the UK Advisiting and Tutoring (UKAT) Allied Group of NACADA - promoting global best practice in academic advising and personal tutoring.

An elected position managing the publicity of the UK Advising and Tutoring group a body of professional practitioners and researchers interested in all aspects of student advising and personal tutoring in the UK.

The main purpose of this role are split between Student Voice and Peer Assisted Learning (Developing). I help ensure that the Union of Students exists to be the legitimate voice of students at the University of Derby through developing democratic structures, enabling and empowering student representatives. Supports the ongoing development of the student voice and feedback mechanisms in the University by overseeing a quality network made up of students, staff and representatives. With the teamI lead, I set up the sector leading institutional wide Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme from scratch involving 35 paid PAL Leaders supporting thousands of foundation and first year students via an engaging online platform.Other duties include responsibility for organising the Unions Main and By Elections as required, acting as an Election Official and, lead on Officer Trustee handover.Involved in developing people and relationships, ensuring the Union of Students maintains excellent and professional relationships with Deans of Colleges, Heads of Departments, the Student Experience Team, International Office and other University professional service departments as required.

Managing a team of 4 permanent staff and 12 student staff working to deliver; student led societies, peer mentoring, student fundraising (Raise & Give), volunteering,environmental sustainability, employability/skills based training for our volunteers and personal development tutorials for our further education students at Buxton and Leek College. I specialise in student mentoring and coaching enabling students workers and volunteers to be trained to support their peers.I aim to enhance the experience of the Students’ Union’s membership through providing opportunities for members to learn, develop and to enhance their employability and understanding through a range of enhanced extra-curricular activity which benefits both the membership and the society they are part of.

NACADA is the global community for academic advising. The NACADA REVIEW: Academic Advising Praxis and Perspectives is a peer-reviewed, online academic journal which connects the practice of academic advising to theory from related, relevant fields spanning education, the humanities and social sciences. The NACADA Review puts theory-based application center stage. As an Editorial Board member I review submissions for the journal prior to publication, working with authors to develop articles and help ensure they are to the high standards to which NACADA requires. The Review’s editors subscribe to the interpretation of scholarship as suggested by Ernest Boyer (1990) in which the creation and integration of new knowledge go hand in hand with a commitment to its application and dissemination. This dynamic relationship between theory and practice is also known as ‘praxis,’ the process through which new knowledge and theoretical frameworks help practice evolve and improve. The articles published in the NACADA Review contribute to this process of ‘praxis’ by presenting ways in which practice can be understood in terms of theory, and theory can inform practice.

Support international initiatives, host and welcome overseas visitors to conferences and events, speak at conferences on international issues, represent the AUA at conferences abroad, write articles for AUA publications.

Manage the Student Success Coaching ProgramMonitor the academic progress of first-year students; identify students experiencing academic difficulties and design appropriate interventions.Teach section(s) of UNIV 1001 – the first year seminar.Collect and analyze data regarding retention and student success. Build on-going relationships with students throughout their first year. Facilitate student success by defining and implementing proactive strategies that help students define their academic goals, manage their day-to-day progress and provide them with opportunities to stay connected with the university community. Collaborate and partner with colleges and other departments to identify and address student needs. Develop and implement new and enhanced student success and retention programs and services. Assist in all aspects of the enrollment process including recruitment activities, testing, advisement and new student orientation. Actively collect and use data to make decisions and improve both individual and office performance. Serve as a resource to all students coming to the Student Enrollment Services Center.

As a Department Manager I have:• Managed the recruitment, induction, line-management, workloads and appraisal of 10 staff and interns.• Played a key role in creating, developing and leading all aspects of a new academic department encompassing 70 staff and around 1000 students• Spearheaded academic advising within the department ensuring that students receive the necessary support from professional and faculty advisors.• Managed all aspects of the student-related academic cycle ensuring that institution and department policies, procedures and systems are explained, implemented, reviewed and revised.• Led a successful Quality Assurance Review and overseen the programme annual review process. • Co-ordinated the department’s marketing, communications, website, publications, student handbooks, events and budget setting.

Since election by colleagues, as part of the University Council I have:• Voted on key issues such as the annual revision of student fees and strategic direction of the University.• Participated in the launch of our international, online and distance learning provision in co-ordination with Laureate.• Approved a major campus redevelopment• Overseen a dramatic increase in our international student population and study abroad students.• Developed a greater understanding of the University and its place in the global Higher Education sector.

Seconded role in which I:• Managed a team of up to 20 staff who during the period processed the applications of over 15000 applicants across all faculties and from foundation to research level.• Oversaw (in the words of the Vice Chancellor) “a huge improvement in the admissions team’s handling of turnaround times and conversion” resulting in record numbers of enrolments.• Created stability and provided leadership through a period of significant challenges, change and restructuring, liaising directly with the most senior staff of the University.
