LastCallTexas explores the winners and losers in this derby to sell alcohol in Texas. We look at what drives these capitalistic daredevils, and what tricks they’re employing to turn a profit. Behind all this are more than 2.3 million data records released from liquor license holders, who are required by Texas law to report beer, wine and liquor sales each month to the Texas Comptroller’s office.

Covered speeches delivered by state officials, thought leaders and local officials. My duties included contributing to the Dallas Innovates news site. Wrote about cutting-edge technologies, including digital twinning, nanotechnology, and autonomous vehicles in Dallas-Fort Worth, primarily by consistently updating an exclusive, interactive map.Several stories I’ve written have involved the intersection of innovation and public policy – especially personal data security in the health care, IT, and transportation spaces. Advised lawyers from major Texas law firms on media relations; match journalists’ legal queries to the expertise of more than 100 attorney clients.-- Routinely ran queries of federal court records to identify newsworthy trends. One analysis determined the America Invents Act played a role in causing patent litigation to more than double, and collaborated on a Dallas Morning News article explaining the trend.-- Initiated the company's data analysis arm, to add statistical expertise to client legal knowledge. Data sets analyzed included Bureau of Statistics data, state vehicle accident data, elevator license records and boat accident data.-- Used state accident data to collaborate with NBC5's Scott Friedman to create a map of DUI hot spots in North Texas. My client was among the experts featured in the piece.-- I was the go-to media specialist, billing lawyers $250 per hour to place clients in the media, arranging interviews, sending pitches and distributing press releases with a high success rate.-- Wrote columns with lawyers on timely topics, such as the Texas Rangers’ bankruptcy, changes to non-compete clause laws, and the need for judicial pay raises in Texas.-- Researched and wrote news releases based on breaking news, promoting my clients' legal practice areas.

Provide content to media in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi to increase participation in the decennial census. I was in charge of the region's facebook and twitter accounts, creating content for both and posting links to worthwhile census-related content. We helped coordinate media interviews with census takers, and helped the public understand the U.S. Census as a Constitutional mandate. I helped regional director Gabriel Sanchez write columns for publications such as the Dallas Business Journal, promoting business participation in the Census as well.

Work included:-- Analyzing thousands of Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs tax-credit housing records to identify low-occupancy units that were competing with newer developments in South Dallas. The resulting story published here.-- Breaking the story of how a former Dallas Press Club president allegedly rigged a prestigious journalism competition and misused the club’s credit card. The story won a first-place national award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW).-- Exploring legal trends and legislation impacting businesses, including developments in the margin tax, tort reform and in intellectual property litigation..-- Breaking the story of a U.S. Congressional candidate who used the proceeds of his nonprofit to fund his NASCAR truck racing team. The federal government ultimately revoked the nonprofit status.

I broke the story that a family court judge was using tax money to appoint attorneys for children in divorce cases. That practice, according to sources, was an unnecessary and unmandated taxpayer expense.

I used police data to show that the number of arrests involving black children more than doubled over a five-year period of time. Since then, the community has formed an oversight board regarding police conduct.

Traveled to Bosnia-Herzegovina with United Nations Adopt-a-Minefield leader Henry Horne Jr. to document mine removal efforts.

Edited the newspaper, and aided its transition from a monthly to a weekly.
