Vessel schedulers for the Port of Newcastle is a continuation role from the Vessel Traffic Services position and was formed as part of the privatisation of the port. We are responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective management of all shipping movements within the harbour limits. All schedules within the harbour movements must comply with the strict safety protocols, and must take into account asset availability, tidal restraints, and multiple shipping movements on a single channel. It is vital to have a good situational awareness as well be organised, methodical, and analytical. The schedule is constantly evolving and requires constant attention to maintain the requirements of our customers. The role is very customer service orientated which requires excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Over the past few years I have built an excellent rapport with our customers which helps in scheduling conflicts and to liaise with multiple customers, government authorities, and stakeholders. This position is operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The primary role of the VTIC is to operate the vessel booking system, which includes logistical planning, booking and confirmation, coordinating of vessel and helicopter movements in accordance with using the port operating guidelines. As a VTIC I communicate constantly and liaise with various parties including vessels masters, shipping agents, terminal operators, marine pilots, and helicopter pilots. We also have VHF Marine coast radio responsibilities to listen out for distress and emergency calls. The vessel traffic office operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as such I work on a rotating shift roster.

Predominantly a deep wrecking diving operation, a high demand for safety a logistic coordination are required to maintain the dive boats schedule. It was a great insight into logistics and account management one I will certainly take with me.
