About David Otway
Dr Otway is in charge of the 1st Year Undergraduate Chemistry delivery in the school of chemistry at UCC. He chairs the 3ELT (Existing & Emerging Educational Learning Technologies) working group at UCC; is a member of the University's working group on AI; was a member of the VLE selection group and was an early adopter of Canvas at UCC; he is deputy chair of the Academic Council (AC) Learning & Teaching Committee at UCC, a member of AC and AB, deputy chair of the College of SEFS Leaching & Learning and Student Experience Committee; he is the Chair of the Chemistry Outreach & External Engagement Committee (OEEC), the co-designer of the UCC chemistry website, a member of the school of chemistry teaching and learning committee, a staff representative on the Student Chemical Society at UCC, a member of the Staff/Student Committee and coordinator of a large number of chemistry modules.Dr. Otway obtained his BSc, PhD, ARCS, and DIC from Imperial College. He has held research posts at Georgia Tech., Atlanta, USA with Prof. W. S. Rees, Jr., at Imperial College with Nobel Laureate Prof. Sir G. Wilkinson, FRS and Prof. P. O'Brien. He was a fixed-term lecturer in the Electronic Materials Group in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College, London. He then worked for a start-up company - Amedis Pharmaceuticals Ltd, UK (later acquired by Paradigm Therapeutics Ltd, UK) initially running their chemistry function and this role later developed into being the Competitive Intelligence, Cheminformatics and Information Manager for the company (2001-2005). He moved back to academia taking a position in the Chemistry Dept. at UCC in 2005. He has gained a PG(cert) and PG(dip) in T&L at UCC.Dr. Otway's principal teaching/research interests are in Organometallic Chemistry, Main Group, Transition & Lanthanide Metal Complex Chemistry and also Inorganic Materials Chemistry. Research is directed towards the following topics: Organometallic Chemistry of the Main Group and Lanthanide metals with especially (but not exclusively) pnictide or chalcogenide ligands and MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) of thin films of materials. Metal oxide and mixed metal oxide materials for use in microelectronics and characterization of nanomaterials in mesoporous silicon structures.
