I am responsible for the network architecture within a global population of 9 enterprise-scale datacenters, and many more smaller co-location facilities. I define the architecture, ensure standards are maintained, and determine strategy and evolution of the network in line with business requirements.While working with major vendors such as Cisco, Checkpoint, Palo Alto, and F5, I maintain a broad and deep overview of the industry, and engage with other vendors to maintain visibility.My current challenges (2021) are supporting the separation of the heritage Refinitiv network from Thomson Reuters, keeping visibility of the integration with LSEG, and architecting the switching and network services components as we steer the network towards a more orchestrated and automated method of operation, with intent-based infrastructure & design as code.

Working for the Principal Network Architect, I am responsible for the Datacentre Networks across the business.Achievements and ongoing roles:+ Supporting Design and Engineering teams on a technical and architecture basis+ Simplifying datacenter to WAN handoffs+ IPv6 strategy and architecture for the datacenter+ Network simplification and migration+ Architectural steer for exiting legacy datacenters

I was part of the LAN Development team, maintaining responsibility for defining standardised elements of the network architecture, and supporting the engineering and design teams in utilising these standards. My primary achievement was the network design for the new Thomson Reuters Aurora datacentres, building on previous work on the Cell 2.0 architecture, and network elements designed for the Virtualisation initiative. The design responsibility was very broad, with involvement supporting the higher-level architectural definitions, right through to supporting the implementation by ensuring correct placement of systems in cabinets suitable for their network connectivity. A keen eye for detail was vital in this.I also managed the technical engagement with a key network vendor, and was intimately involved with identifying and remediating several complex technical issues.

I was a key member of the team responsible for defining a Virtual Infrastructure for Reuters. While virtualisation of the server estate is not a network responsibility, ensuring the networks support the hosting infrastructure for Virtual machine is crucial. From the start of the initiative, I was involved defining network designs, consulting on possible topologies, and ensuring a good fit with the existing network.I assisted in the design, and was responsible for the testing of the network elements of the new Cell 2.0 design, supporting virtualised network partitions within the existing Reuters datacentre architecture.

Senior Consultant, dealing with IP network design and implementation, in the mobile telephony and large enterprise areas.

I was the Security Technology Development Manager for Frontrunner, reporting to the VP Technology, and was responsible for Frontrunner’s technical delivery capability in the Security technology field. In this role I was the technical lead and mentor for those consultants specialising in security. As well as assisting the consultants in maintaining and enhancing their technical skills, I was responsible for ensuring the company's awareness of the technologies, products and services available in the marketplace.My TDM role also involved presales activity, and technical input into Frontrunner’s offered products and solutions. FrontRunner’s security offering was structured using BS7799 as a framework through my efforts. The company achieved both the Cisco VPN/Security Technology specialisation and the Cisco VPN/Security Services Specialisation (amongst others) during this time, as part of FrontRunner becoming the first ever services-only Cisco Gold Partner

In this role (initiated due to an organisational restructuring) I worked with many different networking and security technologies, including such projects as:• Snort IDS design and implementation on Linux for a Digital Interactive TV datacentre;• Wireless Network Authentication and Security design using Linux, NoCatAuth and FreeRadius for the European Centre for Mid-range Weather Forecasting;• Helpdesk technician (standing in for a junior colleague) at a major train operating company during a Blaster worm infection;• A broad security consulting role for Connex, addressing issues from the policy arena right through to network design and firewall implementation;• Conducted a wide-ranging Vulnerability assessment and Policy audit for the European Centre for Mid-range Weather Forecasting;In 2002, I was one of two consultants leading a small support and implementation team during the early days of a new Interactive TV channel.
