After a lifetime in the corporate world I accepted redundancy in 2003 to pursue what I’d gradually come to realise was my real interest – training, developing and helping people. In particular I realised that many of my former colleagues – scientists – had drifted into management, or been “forced” into management, and had found themselves needing skills they simply didn’t have: skills that they hadn’t been trained for, or that hadn’t seemed relevant to a research scientist.As a result they were frustrated and they were unhappy. What I’ve found as I’ve worked with these people in my new role is that they can learn the skills of technical management, such as project planning, organising resources, measuring performance and budgeting. What’s a real stumbling block is having to manage people, with all their shortcomings, unreasonable attitudes and personal problems. The new managers usually believe that they’re just not “that kind of person”; not “people people”.Now I came from that place myself. With a degree in physics I thought I had everything I needed to get on in R&D. The fact that I was nervous with people I didn’t know well didn’t seem to be very important. But, of course, it became more of an issue, and often stressful, as I progressed into management roles.Through getting trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), I realised that other people are insecure as well! And I also saw how we all develop strategies for getting what we want whilst compensating for our limitations: usually by avoiding the situations we find difficult. So you don’t really overcome the young manager’s difficulties as you progress and get older, you just get better at hiding or simply ignoring them.Now, through one-to-one coaching, articles and online training, I use my experience to help people from science and engineering backgrounds to broaden their skills and overcome the personal barriers that have held them back and made them unhappy.
